I tried setting the kernel variables on /proc/sys/net/ipv4
by using

sysctl –w net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts=1

and get this ERROR
“error: unkown error 1 setting key ‘net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts”

I tried another method by using:

Sudo bash –c “echo 1 > icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts”

and I get this error: “Operation not permitted”

So I modified /etc/sysctrl.conf by adding

net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts=1

and rebooted VPS from PLESK

and check the variable and it's still not changed???!

I look in /proc/sys/net/ipv4 and   icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts has permissions 444

I tried “sudo chmod 644 icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts” it showed no error but the permissions are still 444

Is it possible to change them on VPS? and how do you do it?
Thanks

Hello Lunarlander,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to change some kernel settings from your VPS as this may affect other VPS servers on your hardware node. Our apologizes for inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks. Man, I wish there is information out there on what you can and cannot do with VPS. I couldn't find it anywhere online or in the latest Linux books. Would have saved me lots of time from running in to the wall  Confused

Linux books assume you are have full access to system parameters which is not true for Virtuozzo virtualization technology. Sorry I couldn't reply with this info earlier.
