If I have VPS hosting that was initially setup under the name bob.com and I subsequently setup the nameserver as ns1.bob.com... if I am now planning on changing the name of my company/domain to joe.com and I want to eventually get rid of bob.com, is it possible to repoint things to ns1.joe.com.

I tried setting up a nameserver with the new domain but apparently I can't because the first domain is already registered as the nameserver for that IP address.

What's the best way to start shifting things over?

First, congratulations on have such awesome domains!   Clapping Very Happy

You most certainly can have multiple domains with the same IP Address used for nameserver registration.

I would contact your registrar, because if they aren't letting you register NS1.joe.com to an IP address you already have registered to NS1.bob.com...then you need to get a different registrar.

I use NameCheap.com, and I can do it easily.

hehe. I don't have such awesome domains... but it's fun to pretend.   Haha

yea, between yesterday and today I've decided to keep my original domain and just point the new one to it until I find a purpose for it. Thanks for the help.

Hi Athena,

Just to reply on the initial question. Yes, it is possible to do the switch and I would use this plan:

1. Register ns1.joe.com for the VPS IP via your registrar.
2. Set ns1.joe.com as the nameserver for joe.com.
3. After a few hours of DNS propagation, set ns1.joe.com as the nameserver for bob.com.
4. Remove ns1.bob.com via the registrar you got the domain via.
