Hi, I'm currently on a shared server and am considering upgrading to a VPS server. One of the reasons I'm considering upgrading is that it seems during the average work day, from 9-5 the web site tends to run a little slowly. I wanted to know if a VPS will fix this? Also, is there a way to accurately compare the speeds I'm currently getting on a shared server to the speeds on a VPS after switching?

What does the 'Managed' service for VPS provide? I don't want to manually install Apache, PHP, MySql and have to keep up to date with upgrades....Is that kind of thing inlcluded in the managed service or Is this going to be more trouble than it's worth?

Thanks!

Hi,

VPS is your own and all its resources are dedicated to your sites so it is possible to get best performance on this plan. However, it is still not the only one server using the hardware and there are a bunch of them sharing the same hardware node, so this may result in some problems with sites availability, if your scripts and databases are not optimized for memory and CPU usage.

To accomplish the best performance, I would recommend you to take a look at dedicated plans at https://www.lpdedicated.com/ On a dedicated server, you will be the only one using hardware and even the Dedicated I plan gives performance benefit in significant amount of upgrades.

Unfortunately, there are too many things involved in performance, so there is no accurate way to estimate, if your sites will benefit from the upgrade or not. The best solution at this moment is to mirror the sites to the new location and give them extended probes.

As for the Managed addon for VPS, it provides monitoring of vital services on VPS  such as Apache, DNS and overall VPS availability by Lunarpages admins who will try to fix any issues the monitoring system will show for your VPS. With regards to the server administration, any control panel such as Plesk or cPanel (you use this one on the shared server but it is not available on VPS) will make easy installation and configuration of mail, web and DNS services as well as system upgrades for you.

I hope this was helpful. If you have any questions with regards to the upgrade you can email vps@lunarpages.com or dedicated@lunarpages.com depending on the plan your questions are related to and our administrators will be happy to help you. If you include your contact phone number and the best times for call, we will schedule a call to you to discuss the upgrade. Feel free to post your questions here as well.
