The VPS plan is great if your running a site that requires a little more power then the standard shared hosting plan but dont require or cant afford the costs of a full dedicated.

I ran the VPS for about a month myself before going to dedicated and it was great.

One tip....dont have 23 crons running every 1, 3, 5 mins  Grinning

Hi Reasonpolice,

You don't need to worry about excessive CPU usage on VPS plan because you won't be allowed to use more than it was limited for your VPS server. The only thing that may force you to cancel VPS is your site(s) becoming slow due to your scripts requiring more resources to serve more visitors.

^ okay, thanks.  If gallery2 ends up running slowly on VPS, I'll assume Lunarpages can upgrade it to a dedicated server, without me needing to reinstall gallery (I would just pay more for dedicated).

Do you have a link to instructions for installing gallery2 on your VPS?

Hello,

Please note that we can move data only if you use cPanel on both servers. If your VPS is using Plesk, you will need to copy your site yourself.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if anybody documented the steps for installing gallery2 on VPS. Please feel free to do so and publish on this forums once you get the script running on your site Welcome.

In comparison with the regular hosting plans (basic and business) you would have nothing to worry about as far as CPU cycles go.  Since you would be on a more dedicated machine (of course, a little less than a dedicated account) I wouldn't see you running into any issues.  As Ryan said though, we do have people using Gallery2 on the shared servers with no problems.
I am also thinking about upgrading to a VPS as well..... The reason? CPU usage. I was just warned the other day and I need to know if a VPS will work for me, or if I need to go dedicated.

Here are the stats that were sent to me.
CPU 9.44 -  MEM 5.76 - SQL 1.0
Top Process   %CPU 40.0   /usr/bin/php

another instance:
CPU 7.63 - MEM 4.71 - MYSQL 0.7
Top Process   %CPU 44.0   /usr/bin/php

Hi Jupiter,

Your site has a significant memory and mysql utilization as well according to the stats provided. My personal recommendation would be to upgrade to the dedicated I plan to get a stable environment with some allowance of resistance than using the VPS server at the breaking point.

I hope this helps.

Well... I am hoping that LP Support gets back to me on this. I have a feeling that my FlashChat is causing the problems. So whenever it gets used, I get high numbers.... What I really need to know is what my "normal" numbers are and go from there. I have a feeling that they are much lower and that they were only giving me the stats of the high times when the chat was being used.... So I am hoping they give me the filenames of the suspect files when the high use was happening.

Unfortunately, usage stats from cPanel can list filenames only in rare cases. But you can check your thoughts by doing the following.

Temporary disable FlashChat for 2 days and request the stats for that period from the support. That will be the actual numbers without impact from the script disabled.

Great idea.... It's a big weekend for college hockey and my site will be very busy. It's a great chance to get realistic numbers without the chat possibly skewing those stats.

The gallery2 install was straightforward, even without shell access  Smiling

I'm thinking about a second basic account, which I may later merge with the first and switch to VPS, or dedicated if necessary.  Are you able to copy data between your servers?  i.e., if I have a large public directory can you copy it over to another server.  I can reinstall the gallery,  I just dont want to have to download and reup the albums

Just a note:

VPS does not handle CPanel because of the type of resources that it requires and it will no longer be offered but plesk works just fine.

Quack!

I don't see a reason why this can't be done. Even, it is not necessary to request lunarpages support to move a large folder between servers having ssh access to one of them (you get ssh on vps and dedicated plans). You can use ftp or scp to move your data from shell on the server.

several of our customers have ran Gallery2 on shared accounts without any issues.
I've been running gallery2 on a shared plan and I got this from support:

www.lolzing.com/Disabled.rtf

There's nothing unusual about my gallery2 install.  It's fine if they want to disbale it, but support wants to charge me for another 10 months of disabled service.  Help plz  Smiling

Hi,

The instance of gallery2 was disabled on your account because it was consuming excessive amount of resource and it appeared as there was some kind of exploitation of the script. You would ensure that you use the latest version of gallery2 with all security patches and other coding fixed so that we could unsuspend the script and continue hosting your site.

This fact of the script suspension does not mean that gallery2 is not allowed on our servers. It can be used unless it starts utilizing amount of resources not allowed on shared server.
