I have some really newb questions about VPS. I am on the Medon server right now, I am almost ready to do the move. I backed up all my files and mysql databases. I have never been on a semi dedicated server, so I am not sure what to expect. I am really used to cpanel so thats why I am scared right now.

Heres my questions>>>

> I have 3 My mysql backups, what would be the easiest way to restore, upload them to the VPS server. Is there a tool in Plesk 8.1 that can do? or do I need to use PHPmyadmin to do it? If so, can somone point me to a link on how to do it. I have never restored them or uploaded them, only created them.

> I have 3 more add on sites, It is very easy to add on sites in CPanel, is it easy in Plesk 8.1? I plan on buying the Plesk 10 domains license, so when I add on a sites there wont be any new charges right, sense I will have plesk 10 domains license? Can someone point me to a link on how to add sites on using plesk.

> Is it possible to use CPanel instead of Plesk with the VPS plan. If so how much more does it cost compared to the Plesk: 10 domains license?

> What do I use to create Mysql Databases, In CPanel all I had to do is go to mySQL to create a database. Is it the same in Plesk or do I have to do it another way?

I am just trying to make a smooth transfer. I don't want a lot of down time when I transfer everything. Please help with all my questions. Thanks.

You need to use phpMyAdmin on old and new servers to do export and then import databases. The process should be rather simple if the databases are not big. Export and download the database on the old server, create it on the new server, get into phpMyAdmin and import the backup for the appropriate database.

If your databases are bigger then 50 Megs, it would be better to use mysql command in shell to migrate the data. On shared server, techs will be able to dump your databases are per your request, then you need to upload them to the new server and run "mysql dbname < /path/to/dump" in shell to restore the database. Please note I gave the command as example, it may require some additional parameters for authentication.

It is easy to add domains in Plesk as well as in cPanel. You will be able to add up to 10 separate domain with Plesk 10 domains license without any additional charges. The following link covers the domain creation in Plesk:

We haven't recommend using cPanel on VPS till the current time as there were some resource usage problems. However, a few weeks ago cPanel announced about hard work done on reducing the memory consumption in the panel components, so it appears worth to use it on VPS again. The cost for cPanel is $10.00 install and $35.00/month with no limits on the number of domains hosted.

What do I use to create Mysql Databases, In CPanel all I had to do is go to mySQL to create a database. Is it the same in Plesk or do I have to do it another way?

Database creation in Plesk is similar to the one in cPanel. You just go to the Databases section under Domain management and create databases and users there.

As far as uploading all the files to VPS, Is it done the same way as if I was going to upload all my files to a shared server? I usually go through FTP to upload all my files, is that ok?

This will work fine in Plesk.

If you are considering upgrading to VPS or dedicated server, I would recommend reading the docs for the control panel that will be installed on the server and taking a short course into Linux shell commands if your server will have Linux installed and you haven't used it before. Here are a few useful links:

I hope this helps.
