Hi all,

My VPS went down around 12 AM EST last night.  It's back up now but I'm trying to figure out why it went down.  It doesn't seem like I hit any limits and according to this FAQ in the VPS knowledgebase:

We will charge you $0.75 per each Gigabyte over the bandwidth limit for your plan, we don�t suspend your account and do not send out a warning to you. If you feel that you don�t want to go over the limit, you can limit your accounts so that they cease to operate if you reach the bandwidth limit for your VPS.

I didn't see any out of the ordinary spikes in traffic for both sites hosted on the account.

I submitted a ticket to support but haven't heard anything for almost 4 hours.  My concern is that it may happen again tonight and one of the sites (an online community) is being heavily promoted right now.  I'm just trying to be proactive and want to know if there are any default settings I could modify that might have been the culprit.  The online community only has about 100 members now so the VPS account should be able to handle this.

I'm a VPS newbie and would appreciate any suggestions!

Hi,

If your sites do not open only sporadicly, you you would try to increase ServerLimit and MaxClients in /etc/httpd/httpd.conf. These settings are set to 10 by default which is too low for sites with medium and high traffic. You would use 100 or 150 for them.

Pff I haven't even changed a thing and it gives this error:

Operation restart with the VPS(s) VEID5010116 service "httpd" is finished with errors: #703 Can not start/stop/restart service: Stopping httpd: [FAILED] Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 103 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Invalid command 'AddType', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration [FAILED] .

First something with BrowserMatch not a valid command, can anyone help me please?

I have a busy site and tried to make this change..... When I did, then restarted, the web server would not load.... I went back to look at the file and most of it was missing. I have no idea what happened, but most of the config file info is just not there.

I submitted a support ticket.... But I don't get what happened. All I did was change the default setting from 10 to 100, saved it, but know most of the file is empty.  What is going on there?

What editor did you use to edit httpd.conf?
