Which firewall would you guys/girls recommend? I've tried zonealarm but it crashed my computer a few times so I got annoyed with it. Are any others good? (preferably free ones because I'm a student and VERY broke!)

What OS are you using? Are you using AOL? I'm running XP pro and have had no problems with Zonealarm. Zonealarm is the only free one I have found so far.

Initially I was using BLack Ice cept I got lots of blue screen errors and everytime I'd dial up, as soon as a connection was established my pc would wipe out. I ditched it.
Next I ran Zone Alarm (free for personal use), was stoked with it. When I reformatted however and reinstalled it, for some reason I got a ton of errors and it sent my system ballistic.
I'm now running Norton's Personal Firewall and it's excellent. Everyday it blocks Backdoor sub seven trojans and unwelcome communications.
I recommend it for the more experienced user.

well i'm really pretty firewalled out here. I've used a number of firewalls, and right now i've got zonealarm, just because it's very light on taking system resources. I also have a linksys router hooked up, which has one of them hardware firewalls, so i'm 150% covered. however, i also used this one called tiny personal firewall for a bit, and its not bad at all. http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny?s=796156550180775662A2&pg=downloadit's free for personal use just as is zonealarm. -Brian

If you are using XP make sure the firewall in XP is disabled. Otherwise, I've run Zone Alarm on everything since 98 and never had a problem. I would look elsewhere for your problem.

Stepan, you get your firewall problem fixed? If not, can I get your IP? heheh j/k. I've really never had probs with ZA. You do want to pay careful attention to the configuration panel. Also, I did find it would give me problems if I did too many things where it was asking me if this or that wanted permission to do whatever. That is, if the window pops up saying something wants to access or serve to the 'net, I answer that box before I continue with whatever I'm doing. That did help. But other than that I never had problems with it in 98, 2000 or XP.

Well, I've got the ultimate security now, no internet connection! Our university phone system now charges for freephone numbers and I can't afford the internet anymore. So, yeah, no problems now...

Wow, Stephan, please PLEEEZE tell me how you made that post with NO INTERNET CONNECTION! That's really impressive! Actually, I'm sorry you lost your service. You can always sign up for one of the freebies (if they're available to you) if you don't mind the ads. It's better than nothing.

I go on at university.
None of the free ones are available, I have to pay the university for every minute I am connected, so I'm not bothering anymore.
Well, my ISP is free, but I have to pay phone charges...
