I am sure that this line from my error log was an attempted  hack attack:
[20-Jan-2008 18:51:30] PHP Warning:  POST Content-Length of 713423896 bytes exceeds the limit of 8388608 bytes in Unknown on line 0

I am not sure how they got that far but I see what might have saved me was the default php settings of:
post_max_size   8M

My question: What is post_max_size?
In forms I limit the max size of text fields to only what is needed normally less than 100 bytes. And I limit text area boxes to small amount no more than 500 characters. Is the post_max_size the total of the entire form? For farther protection I could really limit this to 1M or less if possible. Would this effect the the file upload size I have set in a script for photo uploading?
