We have a need for files to be transferred to and from our customers in a secure manner. Currently we are using a system that was set up by head office and it is slow and clunky, so I am investigating doing it via our Lunar Pages hosted site. The volume is not great and I am expecting that we would still stay inside our permissible transfer limit as specified by the hosting plan.

I think that maybe the easiest thing to do is to set up a password protected file for each customer and to put their files in there and then tell them the password so that they can download them. I am not sure whether to use http or ftp, though.

If I use http, I believe that I need to implement SSL. So we would upgrade our hosting plan to allow us to do that. Then what do I do? I go to Verisign and buy a certificate and just stick that in my public http folder? Is that how it works?

If I use ftp, do I need SSL? Is ftp automatically encrypted anyway? I have never seen 'fttps' for example.

Any help and guidance would be much appreciated.

Hi,

FTP isn't encrypted normally.

I think you should e-mail support@lunarpages.com to talk about SSL. I can't really help you, because I don't use it.

I don't know if you can share the lunarpages certificate or if you need to get your own, but support@lunarpages.com will be able to help.

OK, thanks for the answer. I normally like to give the forums a shot first as it takes the load off the hard working support guys, but I will take your advice and send a direct mail to lunarpages support.

Yeah, thanks for trying the forums first, but I don't know how much SSL costs, or how to set it up.

I know it comes with the premium plan.
