Well, some basic things you can do is:
1) Only store information that you absolutely need, like if you don't need to keep credit card info, don't!
2) If at all possible, don't set any of your directories to 777, since this would just make it easier for someone to use your space for their own purposes if they wanted to.
3) Keep passwords long and hard to guess and make sure it is a mixture of numbers and letters.  And lastly, change it every 30 days or so.
4) Put important data either in a password protected directory, or in one of the directories before public_html

But like you said, it probably isn't that important, especially if it is a personal web page.

These are just some basic pieces of advice, and should keep you from mostly anything that could happen.
