Hi! I used to use the Lunarpages Basic plan last year but switched out for another provider since I was concerned about CPU usages. My question is, can I sign up for the basic plan, and then if needed, upgrade to VPS? Also, would I be eligible for any VPS offers and during the upgrade, would my site experience downtime? If so, how long would it be?

As for the site, it runs Drupal 5.6 and is mostly a counter service designed for some game site. There's a drupal-based forum with about 7000 posts and the main site gets about 2000 unique visitors daily. As for the counters, currently, 800 of those users make use of the counters, which get an average of 100-200 hits per user. It is powered by MySQL database. Finally, there are some graphics hosted (for the same game site) that use up about 100gb a month in static images traffic. The main site has the modules "Boost" and other features that cache the pages as static html to improve performance.

Does it sound possible to run on basic hosting or should I just go directly to VPS? Thank you for your time

p.s. if needed, i can post the link to my site

Since you know it might already be a concern, I would say go directly to VPS and then you will have a lot less to worry about down the road.   Thumbs Up

Ok. thanks for the reply. I'll probably go that route but from what I've seen here, it seems to be a complicated process. For instance, there is no control panel (or at least from what i know) Also, how would i go about creating sub domains? or sql databases? Finally, it appears that I need to register nameservers but there is no option at my registrar (it's hostmonster by the way) unless all I have to do point it to the VPS's ip address.

Thanks again

The VPS hosting plan comes with Plesk (where you can host up to 10 domains) for for no extra charge.  If you would rather have cPanel, it would be a $10 charge to install, and then a monthly fee of $35.  If your current domain name registar doesn't give you that option, then you could also move your domain name registration over to us too.   For more details and specifics, you might contact sales@lunarpages.com to talk with one of our dedicated hosting specialists or to setup a callback so you can discuss this with them one on one.

Let me see what I can do to help here.  I think the main problem might be just a few misunderstandings.

For example, you say that:

As for the counters, currently, 800 of those users make use of the counters, which get an average of 100-200 hits per user. It is powered by MySQL database.

On our shared hosting plans, you would be limited to 50 concurrent connections to a database per user at any given time.  So do you mean that you have a single user that makes 100-200 concurrent connections to the database at a single time, or does that have more to do with the traffic or hits you receive in general?

Also, do you have any example server resource usage that you could share?  That might also help.  Let me know if I can be of anymore assistance, would be happy to help!

By users, I mean, the number of registered users on the site. As for the average, it refers to the daily average (I guess I should have made that part clear) Basically, once the hit from the counter is documented, the SQL connection is closed and according to server logs, the sql database is being accessed roughly once per second so I think I'm fine in terms of concurrent connections. As for server resources, I can't really provide much except for bandwidth and the counter service uses about 20gb per month.

I'm probably at the border between shared and VPS, but I still think dedicated is just too much Razz

I agree, I don't think there would be any need for a dedicated server at this time.  If it were me, I would go with the Linux VPS hosting plan, as I think it best suits your needs and to eliminate your worries about resource issues.  If resource became an issue down the line, there is always the ability to switch between hosting plans to suit your needs.  However, you could try things out on the Basic hosting plan first as another option and then move to VPS if needed too.

I just wanted to let you know, you still have plenty of options, as far as I can see right now.  Thumbs Up
