My current host was recently hacked. My index page was rewritten by the hackers. (Luckily I caught this very early and fixed it immediately). Shortly after, my host went down and has been down now for 2 days. It is not clear if they are down because they are fixing the problem or if they have been hacked so badly that they are struggling to recover. Their toll-free phone number says "Thank you, Goodbye" and nobody responds to my emails. What a mess.
I have 2 questions:
1. What does Lunar do in a similar situation? Have you been hacked and what is your recovery procedure?
2. I am only 6 months into my annual hosting subsciption with this other service(ha) provider. If I tranfer my domain now, what happpens to the files I leave behind on their server? How common is this scenario, and do I have any recourse?

Lunarpages has never been hacked into!
Security is very important here, and it is unlikely that it would ever happen, but each server is totally backed up, including the operating system, so could be restored, fixed and put online straight away.
The servers run Linux, which is a very secure operating system compared to Windows for example, and there are hardware and software firewalls to keep out malicious traffic.
If the worst were to happen, your phone calls and e-mails would still be answered, and you would be able to read about the problem on these forums.
I'm not sure what would happen to the files you leave behind on the other host. It depends if they are still there.
If you can download them, that is perfect. If not, hopefully you have a backup. It's really up to the other host, unfortunately, if you can't access them, and they do not answer e-mails/phone, there is not much you can do until they do answer you.
Anyway, rest assured, lunarpages is very secure.

Thanks for the info. I just signed up for Lunar - just waiting for my access info.
The good news is I have a current back-up of my entire site, so I will be able to upload it here without a problem.
My biggest concern is leaving my files on their server - I would feel much better if I could delete them before leaving. I don't like the idea of leaving my "property" in someone elses hands.
I actually spoke to someone today - the conversation convinced me that I must leave immediately. They still can't find what is causing all their sites to be down - the guy said it was one small piece of script. I asked why they didn't just load a backup of the server. His response was "I'm not a technical person, so I don't know what you mean." Yikes!
BTW - for those interested the company I am speaking of is FreeHostingWeb.

Jeese jilld, if I didn't know better, I'd swear you are me! My site is also hosted by Free Hosting Web. My site was also hacked Sunday the 2nd. My site is also still down! When I contact Bill in tech. support he says alot but nothing gets done.
Now to be fair, he did offer to move my site to a different server. However with all the problems I've had since July, if I have to change my nameservers and wait for the info to propigate, I mine as well change hosting services.
Does anyone know if Spamassassin is available and can I enable through CPanel? Since I lose my SSH capabilities, how do I edit my .spamassassin/user_prefs file? What webmail does Lunar Pages provide? Neomail? Horde? How many email blockers am I allowed to have? I currently have 45+.
Thanks!

Your previous webhost sounds a bit dodgy!
Then again, computers are strange things, and things can go wrong for no apparent reason.
Of course, not on lunarpages!!!

snyded,
I had a bad experience when I called Freehostingweb too. I spoke to a guy named Roy and he told me that there was a script that was causing all the problems. I asked him why they didn't just load a backup of the server. He said he wasn't a technical guy so he didn't know what I was talking about. Cmon, folks, get real.
One thing I do that saved me from this whole mess - I maintain my domain names through a domain account manager - separate from my webhost and use URL forwarding. I also maintain my homepage on a different server. So when freehosting web went down, I was immediately able to post a notice on my homepage, and redirect to visitors to alternate pages (obviously not my complete site, but enough for them to know I am not out of business)
I asked Roy if they were planning on refunding money to their customers for the time they have been down and he told me to send him an email. I didn't bother - I just don't have time to dedicate to recovering $30. I still have 6 months left with them.
I just switched over to Lunar as fast as I could anyway, and I was back up and running in no time. My site can get as many as 2000 visitors in a day (it fluctuates) but my busy time is weekends. I didn't want to take the chance that my site would be down that long.
I see that they still have not come back up on freehostingweb! I really can't believe it.
