I'm considering moving my website and domain from *another host; what is needed to do so, and is there anything else to consider (*another host was my first webhost)? I've read that it can be a pain and would like to be prepared when it comes time for the transition... Thanks!

BTW, I'm looking at the Basic Hosting plan.

Thank you for your interest in Lunarpages for your web hosting needs.  The rough draft of what you will need to do would be:

1.  Backup all your files, settings and scripts from your old hosting account to your PC
2.  Sign up with us, and then upload your content onto your hosting space with us
3.  With your domain name register, update your nameservers so your domain name there points to your hosting space with us.
4.  Once you are sure everything is moved over and you didn't leave anything behind, then you can cancel the old hosting account.

I hope that helps and if there is anything else we can do for you please feel free to let us know.  We are here to help with anything else you might need.  Thank you for your time.

Thanks Mitch...

Update my nameservers? Not sure what this means, but I believe my domain name is registered with my current host (does this make sense?), and they aren't answering my emails regarding this task (they do not have a contact phone number). I've been using them for about 6 years now, and don't recall going to another party for the name register when I started. Can they hold my domain hostage? It is, after all, my actual name...

That said, I don't even know how to cancel my account... they won't respond.

To find out who is your domain name register, you can use a WHOIS search tool.  One of my favorites is domain tools.  Just type in this address into your browser and you should be given some more information on it:

domaintools.com/yourdomain.com

Of course, please replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name.  You can also use this same tactic to find maybe some alternative contact information for your current web host.  Might see if you can use that tool to find a number to call or some other additional contact information for them.

Hope that helps!

Okay, an update... still no response from my current host, and after checking whois I've found the domain is registered in the name of my host, not myself. Also, the phone number provided on the whois is apparently invalid. I Googled the number, and it appears others have had the same problem. I have the name of the registrar, so I'll try going through them next, although I doubt there's much they can do since it's not in my name.

It's a shame you can't show the names of other hosts on the forum, because I have the feeling that many more of Lunarpages' prospective customers are having/will have the same problem and questions and will be searching for it...

Thanks for your help Mitch, now if only I could get that from you know who ;-)
