Getting ready to start a new account and I have a few questions.  Currently our organization is hosting our own website and we are changing the site to use Drupal and as a result we will need to have the existing site up and running at its current location while we develop the new solution.  My questions are:
1. What is the best way to set up a site on lunarpages to develop this new site then start using the existing domain name on the new site.  For example, I currently have www.mycompany.com which needs to stay where it is until the new site is ready then move to the lunarpages site.
2. what is the best way to setup a development environment, testing environment, and a production environement where I can promote from one environement to the next through the website product lifecycle.  Should I be using sub-domains or just create a completely different site for each.

thanks in advance for any help.

Hello, happy to hear you wish to host with us.  Thumbs Up

I would recommend signing up with Lunarpages using our sub-domain option.  That would give you a URL like this:

yourname.lunarpagesowneddomain.com

That way you could get your new site ready without touching or altering your current domain or web site.  Whenever your ready to move the domain over, all you'll need to do is contact support@lunarpages.com and we can switch the sub-domain for your real domain name.

To do this type of work in the future, you might be able to do it through a sub-domain of your own domain.  You would just need to be careful that the search engine robots did not crawl it, and you might put a password protection on it so only the people you want to get in can get in.  Hope that helps!

definitely helps thanks,  as a followup, would it be possible that the subdomain yourname.lunpagesowneddomain.com could be accessed as
dev.yourname.com and do you know if there will be any problems setting up multiple independent drupal environments as sub-domains.

thanks again and look forward to signing up today.

Nope, no problem at all.  I would still sign up with our sub domain option, and then contact support and together you should be able to put your own sub domain on that account.

Well, might have to wait until your hosting account is activated.  You should get an e-mail with your account login and user name once it has become activated.  With PHP and MySQL 5 - you should be placed on one with both - but if not then you can request to be moved at support@lunarpages.com.

When you click the link in cPanel it should put in the code needed in your .htaccess file to tell your php pages to use the php5 engine.

sorry operator error.  I enabled php5 before installing drupal and it overwrote the htaccess file.  I disabled and enabled again and it is working.

thanks again.

Mitch, I know this is an old thread but after developing the site we went live on friday and switched from the sub-domain to the real domain.  My question, which I asked originally was how to go about setting up a development environment.  I have my main site and www.mydomain.com.  I created a new sub-domain "dev" and I am trying to access at dev.mydomain.com and I am getting a can not find server at.... error.   If I go to www.mydomain.com/dev/index.html I can see that site but I really need to access it as dev.mydomain.com.  Am I doing something wrong?
thanks,

Hey, not a problem.  Did you notice any errors when creating the sub-domain?  Might drop in a help desk ticket to support@lunarpages.com to check things out on the account side.
