Hi all, I'm new here and I'm thinking of purchasing a hosting package but I would like to have something cleared up before I do.
I'm in the UK (Please don't hold that against me  Grinning ) I have a 16mb copper connection but in fairness, I live a distance away from my exchange so the best I get is 5.5mb. I can d/l from other sites like apple (I use a mac) at this speed (5.5mb) all day long if need be, but when I use your 100MB test file, the best I can get is 320kb and when I use the 2 different 10MB files in the post, they both d/l at 295kb. Also, when I click on a link to any of Lunar's pages, I get a lag of about 5 seconds before the page starts to load. I know all sorts of things can contribute to this but I've a fairly good system (Quad G5 2.5ghz 4Gig of Ram top end grfx card) so its not down to my system and tests using other sites in USA both before and after show that I get my full speed with them.
I have done a trace route and ping to both LP.co.uk LP.com and the results are below, you tech's will be able to see if they're good or bad better than I.

I stopped it again at 16 as I assumed it was going nowhere or somewhere it shouldn't be.
So are these any good? Why are your pages slow to start when I click on them?
Also, I would like to know, if lets say, I had an account, and ten or twenty peeps were to d/l the same file off my site at the same time, is the bandwidth speed going to be shared between them all slowing the d/l down to a trickle or will they all get the full bandwidth?
My last point, (honest) what are the upload speeds as I need my customers to be able to upload files to me up to 300MB I would imagine and I will need to upload files sometimes above 1GB at a time. Not for storing, for them to d/l their DVD that I will have made them from their uploaded files.
My own upload speed is 768 and I do reach those speeds but I may be changing to an ISP that offers 3mb upload with 24mb d/l soon so can your sites handle that?
Hope you can answer me these questions?
Thanks very much in advance, hope to be a customer soon as my host at the moment is USELESS! (Siteground.com) you can read my review here

If possible,  I would test things out a few more times. A lot of the measurement of how quickly you can download and access the servers would have to do with the ISP connection as well as the server - so that is something that can also not be ruled out as a problem.

Been searching the last couple days for a new hosting outfit.  Saw your download speed thing while I was checking out various companies.  Don't know why I signed up for the forum just to make this post but I have to say I am very impressed.  My current web host-- WebHost4Life-- and I have been going round and round for days on ftp download speed.  I am getting dial-up, yes, 57 KB/s and they had the nerve to insist that was normal download speed on a shared server.  I tested the 100 MB file here.  It took about 2 minutes with an average transfer rate of exactly 1 MB/s and a peak speed of 1.3 MB/s.

This only leaves me with one question.  Are we downloading from a shared or dedicated server?  Either way it's some darn nice download speed!   Clapping

Hi guys,

Could you do a test for me please as well.

I have uploaded a file into one of LP servers
1. http://www.lunarpages.com/speedtest/data10MB.zip - this is the original link posted here on the first page.
2. http://fetu.lunarmania.com/~chern6/speedtest/data10MB.zip - this is the file I uploaded into my LP account.

I am from Australia. I have ADSL2+ at about 10 Mbit/s. So the fastest I can go (from microsoft.com, for example) is about 1000 Kb/s.
I am getting the first file at about 300 Kb/s.
But only about 20 Kb/s for the second one. Sad

It's obviously they are located at different places. And for some reason one place is much slower then the other for me.

I can provide traceroutes if it helps.

The first one (the quick one):
Code:
C:\>tracert www.lunarpages.com

Tracing route to lunarpages.com [209.200.229.4]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  home.gateway [192.168.17.254]

The second one (the slow one):

I got pretty much the same on both :/ Sounds like a routing problem from you to the server.

Just another update guys...

I am trying different time and different ISP to see if it makes any difference.

From this location I am getting about 150 kB/s for the fast one (lunarpages.com).
This is a route:
Code:

It seems to be capped at around 400 Kb/sec. And it's a cap per download thread, since I can get close to full speed (~1800 Kb/sec) when using a download manager with several segments. (And, yes, I can get full speed with a single download thread on other servers, so it has nothing to do with my settings.) The same goes for my website/ftp.

This is very disappointing,
why is lunarpages capping?

Cheers,
RR

I've been getting complaints from customers these last few weeks about the downloadspeeds.
I used to get 75 to 100kbps here in Belgium, which isn't fast, but ok for most (simple) sites.
But now...

 Confused
It has nothing to do with my ISP (350kbps, some customers 1200kbps)
I'm thinking about starting a video podcast, but with this speed I guess I'll have to change host  Crying or Very sad
