On the verge of possibly moving out of a shared hosting plan, whould jumping to a business plan give me a bit more resources to play with? or do i have to jump from a $5 a month plan to a $100 a month plan?

If you want more server resources, you would need to upgrade to VPS or Dedicated:

http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/

http://www.lpdedicated.com/

Both the Basic and Business hosting plans are hosted on shared servers, so switching from one to the other would not help as far as resources go.  Hope that helps!
