Hey folks *1st I apologize if this has been answered before. I did a quick search and didn't see a thread. Don't beat me up Mitch! I have a static site that I put together with Dreamweaver and have decided to move it to a WordPress install and revamp it. The site as it is is real simple, so if I lose it it won't be the end of the world (did you notice that in the same sentence "is is" and "it it" both appeared... and it still worked!). Although I have several sites on the WP platform I have never tried to replace and existing static site with WP before. How would you go about doing this? Should I just copy the text files, delete the old site from my file manager, and install WP? Or, should I install WP in a sub-folder, build it, import the text, and then delete the original site folders and move WP into the index position? As always, thanking you in advance.

*puts the puts away* Hehe.. I would suggest that you setup WordPress in a test environment, then move it over later if you decide you are happy with it. That way you can tweak it it, getting it just right without messing up your current setup. I actually use WordPress to run my resume/bio page. If your not interested in blogging from it, all you really need to do that is different is setup a static page as your default page - rather than a list of posts. Inside WordPress, go to Setting > Reading and then for Front page display, set it to A static page, then select which page you have previously created that you would like to use. Hope that helps!

Did you build that from scratch or tweak a theme?

Did you build that from scratch or tweak a theme? Built it from scratch, however you could probably find one of the basic/un-customized WordPress themes out there, if you wanted a 'bit more of a blank canvas to work with (but the basic foundation to be laid out already). Let me see what I can find for you in my bookmarks and I'll be right back!

Told you that wouldn't take long at all... http://www.plaintxt.org/themes/Lot of good simple/unstyled themes that you could start with - and then make your own.

I would probably go the subfolder route to protect myself from a mistake.

m_kaiser, was there anything else we could help you with - or did you get hard to work on your new site? Be sure to let us check things out once you get finished.

Oh... sorry, been busy with the site. Ha Ha! I'm almost done with the new one; just have to install my favorite plug-ins, move it to the index file, and insert my links! Woo Hoo... I post the URL when I'm done.

Ok, I'm ready.
Am I gonna run into any kind of snag moving it the the index folder? Shouldn't I just remove the original site files and then move the WP install there?

Hmmm... I lost my theme. It's still there; but I doesn't work. If I switch themes they work fine. Wonder how I fix that.

Yeah, might try removing and then re-uploading the theme.

I have to qualify my previous statement: Images don't show up in any theme. It seems that the images are still on the old path. I just don't know how to update it to point to the correct path.
