Stumbled upon a great article that features how to really stop thinking of Facebook as a silly friends site and start thinking about it as a marketing tool.  Be sure to check out this fantastic article on the subject:

Facebook seems to be the hot social network these days that people of all ages are getting involved with. If you don’t currently have a Facebook account, I highly recommend that you go and signup now. If you already have an account, it is time to start using it to your advantage. Facebook is not just a place where you can connect with your friends, it can actually be used to further your personal brand and career.

Do you agree this can be a great communications tool, or think it is a waste of time?

I always post my updates on my site to my Facebook status.

Good to hear, it is a great way to get the word out to a niche group of people you know will be interested in the content.

You could also automate the whole process of posting to Facebook, Twitter, and more using a tool like Ping.fm.  I really like it.

http://ping.fm/

It's a great way to keep all your social networks in sync and up to date easily.  Applause

Thanks for posting this info on ping.fm. I've been posting about my web site http://beachesbeaches.com on several different social media sites. Now I can do it all from one.

Not a problem, always happy to share!  Here is a tutorial on taking that one step further, to where you can automatically share new posts from your RSS feeds into all the social networks you belong to.,

I think that facebook and twitter are great if you have a meaningfully large, engaged audience. I think this is the biggest challenge.  I would love to hear specific stories of success in building a fan base and then keeping them engaged

I agree with you but from my personal experience, it bought 4000 Facebook fans from www.socialkik.com and they added them to my page in a little over 1 month. All the fans appeared to be real and some of them turned out to be great customers.
You should use www.socialkik.com to buy Facebook fans... we purchased 10,000 Facebook fans and we're quite satisfied with the results. It's completely legal because the fans are real and they don't join your page until they check it and find it interestings. Socialkik.com keeps sending suggestions to become a fan until the order is fulfilled.
