I know this is an older post now, but I really think that, while I understand some people putting neither, people who don't get it really are missing the point of a place like Facebook (MySpace possibly as well but MySpace doesn't do this nearly as well as Facebook). Facebook allows you to re-connect with old friends that you might have lost track of as well as connect with other people you don't see on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.
People who you might not think to email, call, text, or IM, but when you log into Facebook you have that person on your friend's list and you see updates for their life. You probably aren't going to go logging or looking up a site for each of these people (if they even had a site they put their status on), but on Facebook you have a wall of people who recently posted and what they posted. Additionally, it suggests people based on your groups who you might know, so you can re-connect with friends from college or high school for example.
I have people I wouldn't even know what they are doing or speak to for the rest of my life if it weren't Facebook, since I lost touch with those people a long time ago and only re-connected through Facebook. Those people couldn't have had my email address as it didn't exist back when I went to high school. Those people didn't have my phone number because I have changed phones a bunch of times since college. Those people don't have instant messaging with me because again, like email, that didn't exist back then. Obviously, Facebook has a purpose that it can serve that is different than each of those other options or else it wouldn't be so popular.
Twitter is far different purpose-wise than Facebook not a replacement for Facebook or MySpace. Twitter allows you to update your status, but the purpose it has is more to keep up with trends and important events in general. Most times people subscribe to feeds that contain small bits of information. News items have broke first on Twitter before the regular news due to people updating their status to talk about something that just happened (like a fire or earthquake), and so you can keep in touch with news quicker there for that reason. It certain could help with tracking friends and what they are doing, but the tools in Twitter aren't that advanced compared to Facebook, so it really isn't a good way to find people to re-connect with in the same way.
Just my two bits on these services. Take the opinions as you will.
