[B]Web hosting Questions: What are or and is:[/B]
« on: January 26, 2003, 11:42:00 PM »
What are or and is:   "[confused]"

MySQL,
PHP Scripting,
CGI bin,
Perl,
LWP Perl Modules,
GD-LIB perl modules,
PERL/C++,
Telnet,
SSH,
SSL,
SSI,
MX Control, <--forgot to add this
Front Page 2002 Extensions,
Zend Optimizer,
Autoresponders.
   "[dunno]"
When Looking For a New Host Which of these Should I Look For?

Yahoo is the first and only web host I've been with so far, but I don't want to really jump from host to host. So before I jump to quickly  I would love to know what these abbreviations mean and there importance,  to pick the best host that suits my needs with the costs.    "[dunno]"

Another Question? Page Builder:
At Yahoo I'm able to design my pages as I choose using my images and such (although there are standard templates to use as well). It's fairly easy to navigate through (just slow and freezes time to time). What kind of Page Builder does Lunar use and how well does it work. And with that what are the limitation of file "types" or "extentions" that can be uploaded to use or your pages.

MySQL is a type of database,
PHP Scripting is a scripting programming language for the web,
CGI bin is a folder you put perl files in
Perl is a scripting programming language
LWP Perl Module is a module for perl,
GD-LIB perl module is another for perl which lets you create graphics,
PERL/C++ are both programming languages,
Telnet is a way of connecting to a server
SSH, SSL, SSI and SSL are all security protocols
Front Page 2002 Extensions are for uploading files via frontpage (microsoft)
Zend Optimizer makes php scripts run faster
Autoresponders answer e-mails automatically!

Super answer. Ok but I need just a bit more. Since I want to switch host I need the importance of them, many host offer some of the same options and others offer either or, so basically what should I be looking for, what's best or better? I'm only slightly familiar with Java that's it, but I don't know the differences between the different scriptings, or data bases or anything, please help!!!!
Any help and answers would be greatfully appreciated, thanks.

i'm guessing the answer you're looking for is centered around whether or not you need any of the features you listed.  the answer is....it depends on what you want to do.  quite a few people that are with lunarpages are advanced users who use quite a few of the features to make highly sophisticated pages to track users at their sites, to provide services like a full blown forum, etc.  others, like myself, just want an advertisement free space on the web.  i used to use geocities to host my website, but after a while their pop ups just irritated me and screwed up my css based design.  i then decided to look for a host that was relatively cheap, but provided alot of features and great service.  lunarpages fit the bill.  i definitely don't use a majority of the standard plan features, since i maintain a simple blogging site that uses php, css, mysql, cgi, and perl.  if you were to ask me what all those things were four months ago, i wouldn't know.  geocities definitely doesn't offer any of them.  just having those available to me here at lunarpages, i am able to learn about them and use them for my purposes.

some hosting services might offer more features than lunarpages, while others might offer a little less.  choosing one depends on what you need and how much you are willing to pay for it.  through my research, lunarpages offers more than anybody for $7.95 per month.

If you want to really get down to the nitty gritty, the things that really matter for the everyday, Joe average user are:

PHP, mySQL, CGI, Perl and, IMHO, a *nix (Linux/Unix etc) type server for security reasons.

Without mySQL you will have no database to store things. Without cgi, perl and php you will have no scripting languages to run say, forums, portals, calendars, etc etc.

I came from a host that offered the same price as here, but there was significant downtime and their admin CP was cumbersome. I haven't had one single issue since I have been here and the CPanel CP is a easy to use admin CP.

Cheers,  "[brows]"

Wickie

i don't think lunarpages has a 'page builder'.  you can either hand code your pages or build them through third party builders such as microsoft's frontpage (this is where the Front Page 2002 Extensions come in) and then upload them.

i also don't believe there is a limitation of file type or extenstions.  i haven't encountered any problems of that sort.  you might want to look at the bottom of list on the following page:

http://www.lunarpages.com/hosting.html

other general questions about lunarpages' hosting may be answered in its faq:

We are looking into getting a page builder. It will probably be an add-on function in the near future. There is quite a demand for it.

Thats cool, as long as it doesn't interfere with the rest of the functions. I know some of those page builders are not very secure, but I am sure you are aware of that.  "[Smile]"  I don't use them. Too cumbersome, give me Dreamweaver any day!  "[Wink]"

Cheers  "[brows]"

I saw that you edited your post.

MX control means that you can change what mailserver is used, you can either use the lunarpages one, or your own if you like.

Is there anything you are still wondering about?

"[eek]"  No Page Builder, ok this would be something new to me.
I was looking over my C drive today and noticed a Folder "Microsoft Front Page", I would assume this is where I would put any applications that I would put on my site. "[dunno]"  I just have no clue how I would place any of it, or appling it to my pages. HTML writing another thing I don't know much about.
So I guess I'm out of luck!  "[behead]"
Thanks for the info.
Any help and answers would be greatfully appreciated, thanks.

I was hoping to join with LunarPages but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. Lunar is one of two Host of the many I've searched  through and over, that has a forum for the site. That's a super plus, but I don't know enough about HTML writing or scripting and such to get started. Yahoo doesn't offer much of anything and what they do have is just to simple. I don't have any real scripting programs or FX Flash, so I'd have to rely on HTML.

Considering my options (unless someone has another idea) I hope anyone, someone here could point me into the right direction. Anyone that knows of any host that has some of the same options or more  with page builder, same or close cost. You can email me if you prefer. Thanks guys for all your help.
Any help and answers would be greatfully appreciated, thanks.

Not having a page builder is no problem.

One is being added soon anyway, but they're not really very good to be honest with you!

The Frontpage folder exists on some systems, even when frontpage is not installed.

If you don't know HTML, then installing Frontpage or Dreamweaver is your best option. these will let you create webpages, and have very good help files!

If you search www.download.com you should be able to find some trial software.

There is a lot of html editing software on there, not just dreamweaver and frontpage, but they are the market leaders.

All webdesign packages are compatible with Lunarpages by the way, and we support Frontpage extensions.
