A Few Questions From a Newbie
« on: April 23, 2012, 06:56:57 PM »
Basically, I'm entirely new to the world of website creation and I have a few questions regarding hosting several small blogs here.

1. Would it be possible to only host my .ca domain here, and not do or do at a later date a domain transfer? Would there be a fee?
2. If I purchase the Basic Web Hosting Plan, would there be a size or page limit to the website?
3. And would having add-on another domain slow down both the websites?

Thanks!

Let's see if we can help out with those questions  :thumb:

Okay, so for number 1 - You can host a .ca domain as part of your hosting package. You will need to set up the NameServer entries on your domain to direct it to the Lunar Pages NameServers issued to you when your hosting account is set up. These details are e-mailed out to you. Details on how to set up the NameServer entry for your domain should be found on your registrar's website. If you are having any difficulty, let us know (here on the forum) who you registered the domain with and we'll try to help out.

You won't need to transfer the domain name to LunarPages.

Number 2 - You won't be limited to a number of pages or size of page on the Basic package. But obviously, regarding size of pages, you won't want to have pages that are so big as to make viewing them a laboured exercise for the visitor. That is not overly likely to be an issue with blog sites, but you'll want to keep an eye on how long they are taking for your visitors to load them. The larger and slower they are, the more quickly your visitors will give up and go else where.

An example of this can be demonstrated by looking at Google some years back. Their website takes about 0.4 of a second to load on average. When they made a small change and it started taking 0.7 of a second to load, they lost 25% of their revenue from advertising. You won't have to worry about keeping your pages quite that quick, but the point at which it is taking more than 2 or 3 seconds to load is the point at which you will start losing visitors.

With regards the storage of files on your account. I'm going to put up section 12 of the Acceptable Use Policy. This basically says that you're free to use the storage space, providing it is for files that are relevant for your website.

Quote from: Acceptable Use Policy - Section 12
You agree not to run a banner exchange, free adult tgp (thumbnail gallery post) and/or free adult image galleries on your website. You understand and agree that shared server space is for business and personal website operations purposes only and not for unrelated data storage.

Number 3 - Unless you have a dedicated server solution, the web server you are placed on will already host other websites. Whilst the number of websites hosted by a server (and their popularity) effect how quickly the server delivers the websites, Lunar Pages load balances their servers. This should not prove to be an issue.

All the best with your venture into hosting a website, and let us know if you have any other questions.

Just to elaborate on @Hush's answer, domain registration and site hosting are two independent things. You are welcome to register any domain name anywhere else, and simply point it to your LP hosting account. You can also register your domain at LP (via TuCows, I believe) or transfer it here, but only a few Top Level Domains are supported (.ca among them). LP does not own domains and only associates with a registrar (TuCows) to offer a convenient one-stop shopping experience.

There is usually a small fee for transferring domain registrations, if that's what you want to do. All registrars charge for domain registrations, so hosts offering "free" domains are simply burying the cost in the fees. My recommendation is to register domains on a dedicated registrar, and get your hosting elsewhere (such as at LP). That way they're separate, and your host can't hold your domain hostage (as some, not LP, do) and moving hosting (if needed) is a cleaner procedure.

2. If I purchase the Basic Web Hosting Plan, would there be a size or page limit to the website?
Like many other sellers, it is "unlimited", but there's a catch. You can only store files on your account directly related to the function of your site. If you exceed a certain percentage of CPU usage, you may be temporarily placed on a different server (sometimes referred to as the "penalty box") until you bring down your usage. If you consistently exceed CPU limits, you may be pushed to move up to VPS or dedicated. If the operation of your site causes performance problems or security issues for other sites sharing your server, even if you are not exceeding the CPU usage cap, you may be moved.

3. And would having add-on another domain slow down both the websites?
To some degree. An add-on or subdomain is a separate website, and so of course will take additional resources. They all count towards your account CPU usage. Let's say there are 300 sites running on a server. If you add an additional site, it's a tiny increase in load. If everyone adds an additional site, that's doubling the load and everything will run roughly half as fast.

Thanks for the reply.

I was also wondering if say, I purchased 24 months of the Basic Web Hosting and I want to upgrade or downgrade my plans or whatnot in the 12th month of use.. Would there be any fees?

As far as I am aware, there isn't a charge for changing the hosting plan, you will just need to pay any additional cost for the increase in service charges for the hosting. You will also need to specify the hosting term (3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, etc.). It would be best to confirm this in advance with the sales team, however. You can contact them at: sales@lunarpages.com

Details on the process for changing your hosting plan can be found here: http://wiki.lunarpages.com/Upgrading_and_Downgrading
