Any Lag Time During Host Transfer?
« on: September 24, 2005, 10:54:07 AM »
I'm seriously thinking about transferring to LP from another hosting service even though my other host has been awesome (uptime, support, etc.).  The main reason that I am considering switching is storage space and data transfer -- my current host, though $1 cheaper per month, offers only 200 Mb storage and 5 GB transfer per month before charging you more or forcing you to step up to their next hosting level.

I was wondering that if I transfer my existing domain/hosting to LP from my current host, is there generally any lag (downtime) during the transfer?  I have many people accessing my site from Asia, and would prefer to have as seemless of a transfer as possible.

The Shuttle plan offers unlimited subdomains, correct?  Can I have password protection on some of them?  I saw two different quantities next to Blogs in the Free Website Scripts under the plan info.  Is that number the number of different scripts available, or the number of blogs that you can have on your site?  Is it possible to have several blogs (one per selected subdomains), as in more than the numbers stated in that listing (3 or 6)?

Okay, I've asked enough for one post. :)

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

When you move over to another host, you need to update your nameservers. This basically makes your site stop pointing to one host, and start pointing to the other.

If you sign up and get your site uploaded, then change your nameservers, you can make the transfer mostly-seamless. It can take a while for the nameserver changes to take effect, during which time, visitors can be sent to either host, depending on how quick their ISP is to update their DNS servers. You can expect a minimum of 24 hours, and a maximum of 72 hours for this process to complete, after which, you can cancel your old hosting.

When I have done this in the past, I disabled dynamic features, such as forums, guestbooks etc, so that I would not have 2 different copies. You could set up everything on lunarpages, then connect to your new database from the old host.

The Shuttle plan offers unlimited subdomains, you can password protect as many of them as you like.

There is no limit on the number of blogs available (within reason), but if you are installing one via the "Fantastico" section of Cpanel, you would need a seperate database for each one. If installing manually, you could have a database shared by multiple scripts. You can also add extra databases for $1 per database, per month.

I hope that helps.
