Control Panel Type?
« on: January 19, 2010, 11:59:49 AM »
Hi LunarPages.
I was deciding on web hosting and LunarPages just stood out to me.

But before I go through with getting my hosting, I was wondering, what type of control panel comes with the Basic Hosting? It says you can get cPanel for an extra $2 a month, so what is the default one?
And if possible, could I maybe see some screen shots or maybe a demo?

Thanks!

You have the choice between two, LPCP and cPanel.  You can compare and contrast them via these two web hosting wiki links:

For a new account, you would get "LPCP" (LunarPages Control Panel), an in-house locally developed control panel. For an extra $2 a month, you get cPanel, which all the old accounts have.

I know the LP staff is going to dispute this, but LPCP is not a finished product. From what I hear, they're still adding base functionality that cPanel has long had. I think LPCP "escaped" too early, under management cost-cutting pressure, before it was anywhere near done. Using cPanel myself, I don't know if LPCP is missing anything critical -- hopefully not, just things that you need to manually edit your .htaccess file for. This isn't to say that cPanel is the cat's meow -- it's very clunky in a few places, such as being unable to add subdomains to add-on domains, and a very primitive redirection facility. Maybe you can look at LPCP as "adequate now and can only get better"?

Thank you both for your replies, it was very helpful to me.
From the wiki, LPCP looks nice. I have used cPanel before, and I enjoy it, but I think LPCP will work just fine.

I would like to know if LPCP is compatible with Litespeed server software.  I know that Cpanel is.  Also why is it that Cpanel costs $35 per month with Lunar while $5 with my other VPS provider?

Be warned that cPanel is very outdated in all aspects.

I am coming to terms with this and decided to do my own installs now, which of course defeat the purpose of having Fantastico...

I don't think LPCP has Fantastico, but to the OP - having been with LP for many years when CP was the default, the new LPCP is easy enough to figure out.

CPanel is thought of pretty much as the de facto standard for server control panels. However, the standard on Lunar Pages (LPCP) is a very capable system. I've been through several control panel software systems, but as an end user system, CPanel doesn't really offer me anything that the other packages don't. After trying it, I preferred HSphere to CPanel. Now I use EHCP on the dev servers in my home office, and I'm extremely happy with LPCP on my Lunar Pages hosting account.
