DNN Parent Portal support
« on: July 17, 2007, 01:52:26 AM »
Hi,

I noticed your add-on module system, running a second website in a subfolder of your main account.

In DotNetNuke, it is possible to run several parent portals in one DNN instance, each for a different domain. For that to work, several domains have to point to the SAME folder.

Notice:

1) It is not the subdomain system I'm looking for. I want to host www.domain_1.com, www.domain_2.com, www.domain_3.com, ... all in the SAME folder running a single DNN 4.x instance and create parent portals for these domains in DNN.

2) these domains are not aliases of each other. i.e.
www.domain_1.com/home and www.domain_2.com/home are totally different pages
alain@domain_1.com and alain@domain_2.com are different e-mail addresses. Both domains needs theire own DNS records and mail servers. They just share the same DNN instance

Do you support such a setup?

If I understand you correctly, each one would not be able to all be in the same folder.  You would have a folder for each install, and then from there as addon domains - the public would see them all as seperate web sites.  Is there a specific reason why you need the installations all in one folder?

Hi Mitch,

The reason is that DNN can handle multiple domains in one instance (setup). The benefit of doing that is that you can buy DNN modules with an "instance" license meaning that they can be used for as much domains as wanted, as long as they run in the same DNN instance.

The way to handle this is to point each domain in IIS to the SAME folder. DNN will scan the URL for the domain name and handle it internally as a different website.

i.e.

www.domain1.com bound to IP aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:80, having "www.domain1.com" in IIS as "virtual header", having c:\hosting\domainx\wwwroot as home folder

www.domain2.com bound to IP aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:80, having "www.domain2.com" in IIS as "virtual header", having c:\hosting\domainx\wwwroot as home folder

www.domain3.com bound to IP aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:80, having "www.domain3.com" in IIS as "virtual header", having c:\hosting\domain3\wwwroot as home folder

now, in DNN, we can create 3 parent portals (www.domain1.com, www.domain2.com and www.domain3.com) each being a different site. But they all run under the same DNN, sharing the same license for the modules. Most DNN module's have this license model.

Did this question get answered? I am now trying the same thing with DNN 6.1 and curious how to proceed.

Thanks!
