LP Dedicated Server as a gaming server
« on: September 13, 2005, 09:19:18 AM »
What is LP's position regarding the possiblity of using their dedicated server service as a multiplayer gaming server, specifically CounterStrike:Source or other HalfLife2 mod.  The price is attactrive to this application only because other gaming hosts are either shared or don't know what they are doing.  Has anyone down at LP set up a game server just to check it out?  I am looking for something to support 32 players with pings below 100.  I'm not even sure HL2 will run on CentOS.

Hi Spanish,

I don't know if anyone has done this yet, but, from my understanding you can run whatever you wish on the box so long as it is legal.

You would be in full control.

As for whether it would run on CentOS, you'd have to check with the HL2 Developers or support forums, but I'm sure it's fine as it is Linux.

the pings of course would be dependant on the location of the players, and the amount of resources used on the box at the time.

If you do it right, it should be good to go.

You could look into installing a different OS if Half Life didn't work on CentOS.

I bet it will though, surely.
