Questions - newbie about to jump on board
« on: June 19, 2003, 07:57:16 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm currently signed up with Geocities Pro and I've been unhappy with as long as I have been a member (my first and only webhost).  I'm a little scared of getting burnt again.  BUT, I really like these boards - they give me a sense of security.  I like the apparent transparency.  :D

I've been searching the boards for hours and want to confirm a few things (thanks for your patience):

1)  Email transfer process.   This is super important.  During the DNS/host transfer process, how will I make sure all my emails go through?  Is it complicated?  Is transferring from Geocities a pain?  Is it easier if LP does DNS hosting too?

2)  Support.  I live in Uruguay and phone calls are expensive.  Can support be given through IM (as well as through the boards and email)?

3) Add on domains.  Can a family member add on a domain to my space and control it completely separately?  I guess in other words, can two logins be used for the control panel?

4) DNS hosting.  I've read the pros and cons of using a separate DNS host.  But maybe its more simple to let LP do it (even though its more expensive than some).  The questions:  who does DNS hosting for LP?  Who owns the rights to the DNS entry?  The Yahoo experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.  Can I change DNS hosts later while keeping LP for webhosting?

5)  Backups.  If some "act of god" thing happens to the data center in LA, is there redundancy in another location?

That's it for now.  Looking forward to your advice.

Hello,

Don't be too worried about transferring, we are here to help you.

During the DNS transfer process, e-mails may be delivered to either webhost. You need to check your old geocities account, and your new lunarpages account for mail.

Transferring the domain name from Geocities/Yahoo should be ok. We can put in a transfer request for you.

It is easy to get us (lunarpages) to be your domain name registrar.

We are in fact very cheap! It's only $14.95 per year.

We use OpenSRS which is a wholesale reseller that sells domains to ISP and webhosting companies.

This lets us keep the costs down.

Domain names are registered in your own name completely, you have full access via a web-based control panel. You can set the nameservers, update your contact information etc. It is very easy.

Support is not given through Instant Messenger software. We would be overloaded with writing messages like that.

The e-mail support is very fast, and lunarforums is also useful.

You can't have 2 logins to the control panel. You can have 2 ftp accounts, one for each domain, if you like.

The premium plan comes with 5 ftp accounts. the standard comes with 1, but can be upgraded. You can buy 5 extra FTP accounts for $1.95 per month.

There are offsite backups, you don't need to worry about it. You can also make your own backups, just download them from the control panel onto your home computer.

So, if a huge earthquake causes California to sink into the Pacific Ocean will our websites be ok? :D

I don't think it will happen! :-)

If you are worried, just download a copy of your website to your local computer. There is a special section in the control panel which will let you do this.

Nah, I'm not too worried about it. :D I've already got all of the website files on my computer.
