Title: Should I pay monthly or annually for my hosting?
Post by: richardwalter on January 21, 2017, 01:58:36 AM
hi,

Some hosting companies are offering big discounts if I pay annually for hosting plans but I am not sure they can maintain their services for a long time which I have faced with same problems in the past.

there are some problems if I pay yearly? What do you consider the best annual hosting service? How would shared, VPS or cloud hosting work in this case?

Should I pay monthly to have better services or annually for my hosting to have big discounts which save my money? what are the advantages of each one?

   About Me:
I'm new in this site, I am graphic designer and have worked with multiple firms

We can only talk here about various hosting plans offered by Lunarpages (and not other hosts). Are you looking to sell software directly via a site, or sell accounting services?

A year is not a long time for an established hosting company. Any host can give a discount for annual payments (over monthly), simply because it's a lot less costly to bill once a year, and hold on to customers for at least a year (setup and takedown costs). For a Lunarpages Basic (shared) hosting plan we're talking like $60 a year (annual billing), which is pocket change for a business. LP does not offer monthly billing plan, as it would be considerably more expensive than annual billing.

Go with an established host (such as LP) and don't worry about whether they'll be around a year from now. As for which LP plan to host on, unless you're transferring over a known customer base and usage amount, just start with Basic. If you outgrow it, you can always upgrade to a higher capacity plan (such as VPS/cloud) and transfer the unused balance to the new plan.

An useful answer. Thanks

A question from the original post that I didn't answer, was what would happen if a host goes under and ceases operations during the year? Well, they would legally owe you some sort of compensation for your unused prepaid balance. This might mean transferring you to another hosting company, or a cash refund. The same would apply for monthly payments, just in a smaller amount. Now, I'm no bankruptcy lawyer (I only play one on a hit TV show), but I suspect that you would be considered an unsecured creditor, and thus at the back of the line for receiving any compensation from the liquidation of assets (if operations cease and the company is liquidated, such as Chapter 7). More likely, the hosting company would continue operations in some manner (Chapter 11), giving you time to decide if you want to bail out at the end of your contract.

Sure, you take some risk by paying a year in advance, but the chances of an established firm abruptly ceasing operations (and not compensating you) is fairly small. Balance that against the cost savings of annual payment over monthly payments (both the resulting monthly cost and your time to deal with it), and you're likely to come out ahead by paying annually.

Since you didn't read the above discussion...

Note that LP offers only annual (or longer promotions), but will let you switch hosting plans (applying the unused balance towards the new plan).

Just my 2 cents worth... as a long-term LP user (since 2003) I am regretting that I renewed on a 5 year contract two years ago. I continue to have constant availablity problems with my sites (down 3 times in the last 24 hours) and LP support staff have no suggestions beyond saying that it must be using too many resources, although there is currently less traffic than a couple of years ago. If I wasn't tied to the contract I would have jumped ship by now, although if they can't get this sorted out I may just cut my losses and run.

Sorry to hear your having problems Paul. Could I just mention  ( On the 'About you' page on your website) it says "....founded the House of Project" and not "....founded the House of Hope Project " And keep up the good work  :thumb:

In my opinion, you can consider paying monthly if the difference is not more than or equal to 10%. But if the difference is huge than you should go for the Annual plan. But if quality of extreme importance then go for the monthly plan.

In my opinion, LunarForums has a very good trust rating and if you are opting for LunarForums, you can go for the annual plan, without worry.
