VPS vs Dedicated Server
« on: January 18, 2011, 08:34:01 PM »
Hi guys,
Need some help or advice. Been with Lunarpages for 3 years now on shared hosting,  my website is growing and I'm starting to get warnings from support  saying that  I'm exceeding my resources. Yeah I can optimize my website but eventually  I will have to move away from shared hosting.

Lunarpages support suggested a dedicated server but I'm not sure if I need one.   Is  VPS a better option  than shared hosting? or will I have the same issue (utilizing excessive resources)  or should I go straight to dedicated hosting? (dedicated I  plan)

Cheers,

Henry

VPS is between the shared and dedicated hosting, and what you need really depends on what your current resource usage is.

If you have received a "over resource" message, please note that you need to reply to that email, and I would recommend asking in your reply if your site requires dedicated or if a VPS will be able to handle it.

If your to close to VPS resource usage, you may need to go dedicated.

Thanks TroyL. Had another question. With the Dedicated  server plans, there's something about managed hosting. Do I really need this? How much different or harder is to manage a dedicated server from a shared  server?

Can I just say as described on other forums, quite a few users are getting warnings about resources.

Is this a pure chance issue or a push by lunar to make more money out of customers?

I'd seriously consider consulting on your resource usage with other providers to see if you need to go down the costly path of dedicated hosting.

Webnewb, this is not some push for money. This is a shared hosting environment where you share the server with hundreds of other customers who also expect their sites to be online and to have access to their fair share of services such as email, FTP, mysql, etc. Our techs are constantly load balancing the servers to be sure they do not get overloaded and bring new servers online regularly. We do let customers who are having usage issues know that we have VPS and Dedicated plans as a possible option as many of them are unaware that we have those or were waiting until their intensive sites are fully built or  get popular and may not realize that time has come. There are lots of reasons why usage can go up on a site and usually it is not as sudden as you think but was actually building up over time until it either just became too unacceptable or began to cause issues for other users.

Henry, on VPS, we limit the number of accounts to around 25 which is very low. You have more control over it and what can be installed. VPS does have higher usage limits. You can also share the space with others which is great for web designers. On a Dedicated server, you are the only account and can do what you wish with it short of breaking any laws or spamming.

Well katrina1 it would be nice if Lunar would answer the thread/threads on usage issues currently in the support forum.

It has to be seen as a mad situation that so many are getting usage warnings, yet I'm not sure lunar even publish what is and isn't acceptable CPU and Mem usage limits?

I can say from my own stats that my site has been more popular in the past, yet now I get the usage warning. This seems to be a similar story to other users (with dynamic and static sites!).

Like I say, my advice to anyone would be investigate other hosting companies before being pushed down the route of VPS or dedicated server hosting, especially in the light of so many customers with the same stories in the last few weeks.

These forums are for users to help other users. They are not for official support. Users with usage issues need to speak with our techs through our ticketing system as they only ones who can help with such issues and we cannot discuss account details in a public forum.

No need to go with expensive dedicated server, too early, but VPS is the way to go, gives independence, stability and freedom. I am using VPS and I am on  :9:
VPS gives you root shell powers but also responsibility is greater - to mess up something is easy, so careful with that too.
VPS ratio value for money is the best, golden middle of shared hosting and dedicated server :thumb:

If your site is demanding greater functionality; and, it’s time for a dedicated server. Choose from six carefully-crafted hosting plans that offer managed solutions, as well as clustered options, to meet your specific needs. Twenty-four hour priority support included, of course.

If Dedicated Servers are more than you currently need, check out our other affordable hosting options.

Thinking about choosing between dedicated server or VPS server?
It is simple decision.
Dedicated servers priced similarly to VPS packages are slower, less flexible, less reliable and simply wrong choice.
When you buy VPS you get dedicated server grade ECC RAM, Raid 10 HDD space, ability to revert to snapshot, make backup of whole system image, latest Quad Core Xeon Nehalem 56xx processor speed, RAID controller with its own memory, and lot more. However, be aware that this is not the case with all Windows VPS[ providers. <spam link removed> is completely different, and you can even run benchmarks and see that dedicated servers with similar speed are 3-6 times more expensive, and you also lose all the flexibility VPS hosting offers.

@Jakson0110 - Copying and pasting a slightly edited piece of sales blurb from a website does not provide accurate information. As can be seen by the content of your post which is inaccurate and suggests that all VPS services run on the same hardware and are faster than Dedicated. None of which is true.

Hi,

That could be a good decision depending upon your budget.
