I think this company and forum are great, first hosting company i've found with such a lively community!

I am considering signing up to the Standard Plan package, and have a few questions:

1) What OS do you use?
2) Is the 'clustered' method in use right now? How many systems are in this cluster?
3) How much bandwidth capacity do you have currently, and how much more on tap?, and what is the average throughput for a small download from a website hosted with you?
4) How long has the company been running?
5) Do you update your server's software regularly to latest versions/patches? ie: PHP, MySQL

6) Do you block certain download managers, ie: Flashget or Mass Downloader?
7) Any blocked file extentions?

8) When 'transfering' an existing domain, do you change the registrar, or affect the domain's expiry date in anyway? OR do you simply update the name servers and Technical Contact?
9) If subdomain.lunarpages.com is chosen (assumingly free), can later on a domain be registered and pointed towards the website?
10) Unique IP for every website?

Thanks alot!

Hello,

Lunarpages servers all run Redhat Linux.

The servers will be changed to a clustered solution soon. At the moment, they are all seperate.

There is plenty of bandwidth to spare on the curent connections. Lunarpages is multihomed with NTT/Verio, Genuity, Global Crossing, COX, Adelphia, AOL/TimeWarner, Japan Telecom and more.

Lunarpages has been around for coming up to 2 years, I think. It is owned by Add2Net.com which has been around even longer.

All software is updated regularly to the latest/most stable version. Beta version are not used, even if they are the latest version, stability and security are most important.

Download managers are not blocked.

All file extensions are allowed, you can even make up your own ones.

You can use an existing domain just by changing the nameservers to the lunarpages ones, no problem. If you want to transfer it across, the expiry data is not changed, from what I've heard. The name of the registrar will change, I think.

subdomain.lunarpages.com is free, later on you can get a domain, but subdomain.lunarpages.com will not exist anymore. Of course, you could make subdomain.yourdomain.com

There is not a unique ip for every website, there's no need. Each server does have a unique IP, and if you want, you can get a unique IP for $2.50 per month.

Thanks for the answers!

One more question..  "[Smile]"

How do the web server's know what website is being accessed if everyone on that server is using the same IP?

The server software (Apache) works it out.

It's capable of having more than one website hosted on it.

It works perfectly, you can have thousands of websites on one computer.

I see..

About the domains.. do you use the control panel to specify which domain(s) you want the site to be accessible on? Assumingly the control panel then updates something on your name servers... ?

Thanks alot!   "[Cool]"

this is a short one

The answer is "yes!"

You can register domains with lunarpages or with other companies.

Just make sure you use the lunarpages nameservers.

Thanks!

I have one remaining question    "[Wink]"   .. If i sign up for a years subscription (ie, free setup) - do you withdraw the moneyies monthly or just a one off payment for the entire year? And will you 'automatically' keep taking the moneyies every year?

Eitherway i'm not really bothered, just need to know!

My previous hosting company (superuser.net) hasn't been replying to my emails concerning resetting my MySQL DB, so i very much doubt they'll reply to a 'Please terminate my account' email! I might have to take a trip down the bank and ask them to block further payment to them!!   "[mad]"

You pay for one full payment period at a time. 3 months, 6 months, or a year (best deal). I believe they will sent you an email telling you it's time to renew each year.

Whatever you decide to do, lunarpages will NOT automatically bill you.
