I am looking for a Linux host that can handle my heavy bandwidth requirements.  It looks to me as though Lunarpages would be a good bet.

Before I switch, however, I would like to confirm that I will be able to upload my site to Lunarpages before changing nameservers...?  I would like the transfer to appear seamless to users.

Is .htaccess supported on Lunarpages accounts?

Does extra bandwidth need to be paid for in advance, or may I be charged as the need arises?

I'm using about 12 gigs a month now, and anticipate maxing out the 20-gig account early in 2004; may I upgrade to the larger account before the first year's contract is up?

Yes, you can use .htaccess  "[Smile]"

And yes, you need to pre pay if you need more bandwidth. If you consumed 80% of your bandwidth you will get an email  "[Smile]"

You should not worry though, 20GB of bandwidth is ALOT.

Will I be able to work on my site (uploading files, testing CGIs, etc) before changing nameservers ("going live")?

If I hit 24 gigs of bandwidth (at which point the larger account becomes more economical) before the first year's contract is up, may I upgrade before the renewal?

Yes, you'll be able to upload your site before your domain becomes active.

JSP won't start working till your domain does, and maybe a couple of other features, but the basics will still fine.

.htaccess files are fine.

Bandwidth can be bought in advance. You will never be billed automatically for it. If you run out of bandwidth, and have not bought anymore, visitors will see a "bandwidth exceeded" page until you buy more, or the 1st of the next month.

You can upgrade before the first year is up. You will have to pay the difference, obviously. billing@lunarpages.com will be able to give you more details if you need them.
