Hi.

I have a message board running on Invision Board's software.  Currently I am using Invision's hosting service but there is a lot of downtime so I want to look at a new hosting company.

I'm wondering how successful people have been using this board on Lunar servers.  Particularly if anyone knows of customers using this software, could you point me in their direction so I could have a look.

I am concerned about CPU utilization mostly.  In terms of bandwidth, the board would not use much at all, since it's all text downloads and have very few images at all.  But there would be a lot of CPU usage due to MySQL access.

What method does Lunar use for monitoring excess CPU usage?  Is there an official definition of it even?  This is something that not many hosting plans seem to list on their terms.  Probably because it doesn't come up that often.  But I would like to make sure before jumping to Lunar.

Thanks for any help.

Lunarpages is perfect for running any type of message board.

People have installed Invasion board on here before and it works. I haven't personally installed Invasion board, but I have used other ones.

Hopefully someone who has installed it will read this and reply, but in the meantime, I can guarantee that it will work.

As for the CPU usage, I can't see it being a problem really. If your site is just using Invasion board, it will be fine.

The lunarpages servers are very powerful and can handle pretty much anything, however, if a user is using up so much processor time that it is slowing down the system for everyone else, something will have to be done about it.

This is really very rare, and can be sorted out by e-mailing support@lunarpages.com.

There are people running all sorts of scripts on here and the cpu usage is fine.

If there is a problem, you will be contacted. Invasion board is fine though.

Hi,

Stephan is correct, the only boards we don't really allow are ultimate bulletin board (hypocrits?!   "[Big  )  and YaBB.

I am running a Burning Board site and it runs just fine here. I came from a host that was consistently down without explaination and had SQL errors. I haven't had one single issue since I have been here, so yes, it's good for message boards.

Cheers!  "[brows]"

Hello,

I have a friend who uses YaBB and is thinking about moving his forum to Lunarpages.  My question is would he be allowed to install Yabb and if not, would the reason be server/cpu problems or just past experiences/nightmares with the software.  Thanks!  "[Smile]"

I would strongly suggest that he upgrade to phpBB2 instead.

There are alot of converter tools out there for him to do an easy upgrade.

Well, according to the last message, no, yaBB is not allowed.

I hadn't heard that we don't allow yabb or UBB, but there you go!

There are many many alternatives you can use.

hi !

hmm...this is the first hosting provider I've encountered who has restrictions on the types of php/mysql based message boards that could be used.

My site uses Agora (www.w-agora.net)

Is this allowed ?
Perhaps you may want to place all the message boards which are allowed into your fineprint.

When most web hosting providers mention that their packages include PHP & MySQL support, basically there is no known limitation or restriction of the use except for its space consumed and/or bandwidth is within the package's allowed bandwidth.

Yes, Agora is ok.

You can use up as much bandwidth or space as you want.

Your sql database can be up to 600Mb on the premium plan, and use up to 60Gb of bandwidth a month!

Scripts which use up too much cpu time and ruin the service for other users are not allowed.

Could anyone venture a guess as to how many users may browse a forum at once, before it become a CPU load problem?

It's not so much a CPU problem as it is a bandwidth problem. CPU and RAM are important, but if you can get the server to initialise, the next hump is the bandwidth.

200 or 300 maybe? It depends on what forum it is, and the size of messages.
