I have noticed that hard drive space is cheap as hell. Even for high-end SCSI drives. I'm wondering why web hosting companies aren't increasing their customer's webspace significantly? I just signed up with Lunar and feel I got a good deal...plus with a public message board, there's nothing to hide. A lot more companies are offering 1000 and even 1500 at the same price I paid here...I am just curious on why HD space to a hosting company is still so valuable when it's much cheaper now then years ago. Any input?

I have a really good answer to that.

Companies that offer that much storage is overselling and most likely using a cheap IDE solution. There is no way they can justify the price based on if they count on everyone to use the storage and protect it with raid for data safety.

Also they limit you what you can use the space for. Another important note is that there are close to a thousand users sharing the same server on average out there.

Harddrives ain't that cheap, not for solid and safe (data protect) raid 5 configurations. Remember with a raid configuration, you need more than three hard drives. The biggest scsi harddrive is 143GB today (most companies use smaller drives) and they costs about $850 a peice.

The solution you are talking about would involve 10+ disks per server. You would need an extra disk cabinet per server to be able to have that many drives wich takes up rackspace (gets even more expensive).

Please read the terms and conditions at the hosting companies that offer what you say, you will find them intresting.

At Lunarpages, there are no limits on what you can upload and use. Thats the main difference. There is another one also, the support.

We are not offering something we can not give you. We focus on customer service and support. And you will have total freedom over your own webhosting package.

It's true, you are paying for reliablility.

RAID 5 uses 3 hard disks to create 1 drive.

The advantages are speed and reliablility, if one drive fails, the other 2 take over.

Understood...since I created a new domain for my photography pictures (yes, I have many) I'd eat 500mb quick. Standard plan here gives you 500mb, which is great for my "other" site, but won't be sufficient for storing my photography pictures. This is why my first question popped up about HD space. I need some and what companies are charging for it is insane. Specially for a hobby/personal site like mine. Ugh.

Are you using jpg files?

Using compression, you can save a lot of space, without losing too much quality.

I use paintshop pro, but you can adjust the quality of jpg files with almost all graphics programs.

I was sending some photos to my parents the other day, and even 10% compression halved the file size.

You have probably done this already, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Someone asked what sites are offering more space and I indicated a few places that were. Not advertising of course (I am a lunar customer!), and his original question was removed also.

One of the web hosting companies just responded to me. They have an OC-3 connection and celeron 512mb servers. My home machine has 768mb!!! My god...I don't get it.

Ok.

That was removed then. It's not really relevent to lunarpages anyway.

However, the lunarpages servers are much better.

Each server has 4 Xeon processors, running at 2.4Ghz each. (note by max: actually it is 2.8Ghz on all new machines)

They each have 6 gigabytes of ram aswell, that's 6144Mb,

that's 8 times more ram than your computer at home,

and 12 times more ram than the other webhosting company!

I deleted your post, as it contained links that where not appropiate. I also emailed you about it.

I deleted all posts in this thread that had nothing to do with your original question. Reason why is that all pre sales questions is preserved for a really long time. If they are not cleaned up they will be hard to understand Smile

Personally I prefer speed and reliability to webspace.
Who needs 10Gb of disk?

I've found by experience, that re-sellers in the main, that advertise unlimited webspace do not live up to their promises, or simply disappear within a few months, leaving your domain stranded.
That happened to me twice before I learned my lesson.!

1000mb=1gig not 10gig. Speed is always great to have and the expected reliability is nice too!
