Hi

I am planning to build a social networking website where users will upload pics , videos etc .
What does it mean when it is said the space is unlimited ? i read thru the forums and found that it is 350 GB .
Is that true ??

Also As my users will start uploading videos will my site become slow ?
Or is it like it completely depends on the server load irrespective of the videos / pics uploaded on my website .

Please clarify .

Thanks and regards ,

Well, with anything generating dynamic content, from multiple sources, main thing you will want to be focused on is server resource usage I would say, rather than bandwidth or disk space (cause we provide you with plenty of that).  Now could a group of friends or a community get to gather on the Basic or Business plan?  Sure!  Could you host Facebook or MySpace from them?  No, that would require a dedicated hosting setup.

What type of script or service are you going to use to run the backend of the site?

How many users are you expecting to have?

Give us a few more details about your setup, and what you are expecting and we would be more than happy to help!

I am planning to build a website for dance in India . A commonplace for all the dancers .
I really do not know the number of users , but it can defiinitely grow .

I will be using Joomla and Jomsocial .

What Mitch said- with that type of site it would be more of a cpu issue- using more than 1%. As far as space and bandwidth, there's no problem. I've uploaded VCD files (~700 mb) to one of my sites with no problems.
I did find that it was easier to host a video file on another service (I used blip.tv, as they would take a 700 mb video file), but the download to burn the CD is hosted on my site.

A lot of it depends on what the video file will be doing- if you need to convert it from one format to another- that takes a *lot* of cpu power, but simply uploading and viewing doesn't take much.

So do you mean like upload videos on sites like you tube and post a link instead of uploading videos on our own server ?

but i really doubt if users using Jomsocial would be able to do it .
I will find more on this .

If somebody has an idea please help .

Hey ,

I understood your point ! Soooo Cool

Now if my users are all uploading videos not on my webspace but on websites like Youtube , flickr , bliptv etc .
I can go for a basic hosting account And this will not affect the speed of my website .

Am I right ?

I really have not looked in to it much, but it is fairly easy to link to and use Kaltura- http://www.kaltura.org/  but it might or might not fit your needs.
It looks interesting to me, but as I said- I haven't really explored it much.

I also do that. Its a good way to save bandwidth and server resources.

Yes, that would be right.  Offloading the video hosting to a 3rd party service would be one way to take the load off your own hosting account and server setup. Very Happy
