Hi,

If I have a script running that sends out emails? Is there any kind of limits imposed on this? My current host (who I will be leaving shortly) has banned me from sending emails from the server because I sent too many in too short of time (like 30 in a minute or something small like that!). Is there any imposed limits that I need to know about, or is it basically just as much as my bandwidth can take?

Thanks!

Hi Kata,

We would prefer that you send no more than 200 e-mails per hour  "[Smile]"

Is that a strict limit? I want to be able to run a mailing list type program from my server for an announement style list that I run.

This is basically the deciding factor for what webhost I choose.

Is it a problem if the script did not utilize the local mailserver, but ran its own utility to send the emails (not placing a load on the servers mail server) but handling all outgoing mail itself?

Hi Ed,

Actually that was something we were looking at, but I've just been informed by Max (who didn't tell me .. sheesh  "[Smile]"  ) that we don't have any limits anymore.

There's an excellent mailing list program, and it's accesible through your control panel.  It's called the mailman listserver.  I use it for my newsletter and it works very well.

How large is your newsletter though?

Does anyone know if there is a size limitation on mailman? I know many providers that offer mailing list services restrict the size to somewhere between 200-1000 members per mailing list..

We do not have any specific limits at this time. However we ask you to not make it too big.

"We would prefer that you send no more than 200 e-mails per hour"

"[redface]"  Ummm... so its not preferable that I mass mailed the 450 users of my old forum a while back to tell them that the forum was moving then? Or are 'one off' mass mailings like that not a problem? ...just for future reference...

Sorry for kicking a three week old topic, but I may be moving on to lunarpages.com, but I have a mailinglist that has over 4000 members. Is that a problem?

I dont  think it is a problem. As long as it is a legit list and not spam (if you keep records of subscriptions etc, then you in luck!) you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I have a list of the same size -4500 and I am about to migrate it over. The servers here are overkill so I wouldn't be too worried about an overload.

Any one 'official' to back me up?

OK, thanks Smile. It's certainly not spam, every single member signed up and activated him/herself through majordomo.

I already signed up with Lunarpages. The package looks great and much better than my previous host.
