I am looking to start a business offering inexpensive, very basic, managed websites for very small businesses. Some will have their own domains, others will work off of one or two shared domains. They will be very low traffic < 1,000 hits/month, no large files.

I want to build this business slowly as it is a part-time gig for me, and I am wondering how to do that with the plans LP offers. I know I will want to end up with dedicated hosting, but it will take some time to build a client base to support $100-200 (+ domain fees) in expense a month. I am also concerned about being able to offer a reasonable price (I intend to use a template that I build, so there will be little setup or maintenance costs, so most of my cost will be in hosting fees).

It may just be that this type of setup is not cost effective in today's environment, but I am open to ideas on how to try and start this and how to grow it.

Thank you.

For how to start, I would recommend starting with a reseller plan , unless you plan on having everyone sign up for their own hosting account, you will need a reseller plan as you can not "resell" space on a shared/basic hosting plan.

Then you will of course need your own domain name to promote and for users to signup on.

Later on, after you get enough users paying you, you can get your dedicated hosting, and either move the users you have as clients onto the dedicated or keep them on the reseller plan, and only move new users onto the dedicated hosting.

You can find information on Lunarpages reseller plan at : http://www.lunarpages.com/reseller-hosting/

The reseller plan is the best place to start, as once you start getting more users signed up, your cost for the "client accounts" will go lower, resulting in you being able to lower your prices as you go on.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are going to be reselling hosting, you will need to make sure you get a support system in place as soon as possible, as if users have any issues, they will want support, and they will want it as fast as possible.

I recommend once you start, you get at least 2 other people involved in your end, so each of you can take 8 hour shifts to provide 24/7 support to your users.

Another route you could take would be the Lunarpages affiliate program.  This way, people could purchase web hosting accounts from us, through your affiliate link - and you would be paid for each person that signs up.  Then, later on - if they need for you to manage something on their account, they can pass their info along to you as needed.  This might be the more efficient way to go for the short term, and also taking this route, you wouldn't have to worry about too much server side support, since that is all handled by the friendly support team here at Lunarpages.   Thumbs Up

Thank you. I actually currently have a Basic hosting plan at the moment. Since I am looking to be the technical resource (I do not need customer-specific CPanels), would it be better to build up using subdomains on my Basic account and once I have enough clients move over to the dedicated? Again, I am not expecting high volume.

Well, you wouldn't be able to host anybody else's web site from the Basic hosting plan, since we do not allow reselling or giving away space to others on any of our shared hosting plans.

That is what I get for not reading through the first reply all the way. Smile

My challenge will be coming up with pricing, I was hoping to come up with something very low cost, but the pricing structure of the reseller plan does not make it profitable for me until I hit the $5 mark.

Thank you.

Hi,

I think you should  choose a reliable and web hosting company which has their professionalism on maintaining their servers. And don't forget that this company should provides full guarantee to the most minimal rate or no downtime at all. Server downtime is crucial and it means all  your web sites are not online, this could possibly cause all your potential customers cannot reach you.
