Ruby on Rails Deployment
« on: September 14, 2008, 09:05:01 PM »
I am looking for a step by step guide of some kind to deploy a rails site on Lunar Pages. As far as I can see there is not anything of worth. Can someone point me in the right direction please? Thanks!

Ruby Asylum has a pretty good overview.  There is some other tweaking to be done, depending, which you can find by trolling through the forum here a bit, like changing the htaccess for fastcgi, setting production, right version of rails, and so on.

http://rubyasylum.com/    There are examples, but you have to extrapolate a bit.  You don't need to do the database like its outlined.  Using cron, you can run migrations. (yay!)

Once I get my fastcgi issues straightened out, perhaps I'll consolidate it. :)  The forums aren't too big yet, and the general set up is in here, if the trouble shooting is not yet.

Having problems when I run the ROR app under lunarpages server. We are past the htaccess issues where it was not even finding the appropriate controller. Now it says

"Access denied for user 'username'@'shadow.lunarbreeze.com' (using password: YES)" where you subsitute with the username that you provided in the database.yaml file. The password is correct, but this appears to be a host name issue. The reference to a host name could be set in database.yaml file. I have tried setting it to

host: mydomain.com

and I have tried not setting it altogether and I also tried

host: localhost

which is how it works on my laptop that runs InstantRails.

Still working with lunarpages support through support ticket but have not been able to talk to anyone knowledgable directly. Will post something here when resolved.

Did you ever get your rails application working?  I'm trying to consolidate and bring a Rails app over from another hosting account I've had.  I can't get past the

errors.  Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

I'm not familiar with RoR, but there are lots of things that can trigger a 500 error. If you brought over .htaccess (and any equivalent of php.ini files) from your old host, there could be commands in it that are not valid on your new server, such as Mod Security settings. Some hosts still permit "world writable" permissions (e.g., 666 and 777) -- those are forbidden here. With PHP, an empty or blank line at the beginning or end is not allowed -- check for that, maybe RoR has the same restriction. You've checked that your files came over properly formatted (i.e., end-of-line is correct)? There's lots of PHP-specific stuff (phpvalue and phpflag, for instance) that may or not be applicable to your case (I don't know what the RoR equivalents are).
