Ruby will be on all our new General servers
« on: May 31, 2006, 03:04:25 PM »
Hi all,

All our new general servers (those without ASP or JSP) will have Ruby on them.  This only applies to new servers going live this week and forward.

For the Ruby servers, some of them will have Ruby and RoR with mod_ruby and eRuby, while others will have Ruby and RoR with FastCGI.  Please note that we cannot have mod_ruby, eruby and FastCGI together as mod_ruby and FastCGI do not play nice together.  eRuby requires mod_ruby, so it is only on those servers with mod_ruby.

If you are going to be using RoR and need an application generated for it, please email support@lunarpages.com with the following details:

Ownership Verification:
- Last 4 digits of your credit card on file with us
or
- Billing address
- Zip code
- Telephone number
- First and last characters of your cPanel password

Account details:
- Domain name
- cPanel username

Ruby details:
- Application name for the RoR folder (it cannot already exist in public_html or www, so please do not create the folder in public_html or www directory)
- Type of Ruby you need (mod_ruby and eruby or FastCGI-based)

If we need to move you to the Ruby server due to not being on one already, please provide authorization for us to perform the move along with the other details noted above.  I would personally suggest RoR with FastCGI as it is faster in a browser due to caching.

Please let us know if you have any questions, and good luck in your coding  :thumb:

Not sure which server is which, but, will this include Sabik? Ruby looks like a real cracker of a code and I would like to try learning it.

Unfortunately Sabik has asp and jsp so will not be getting any forms of RoR. If you need to be moved to a server that does have the RoR then send a request to support@lunarpages.com.

Hope this helps !

Thanks, RandyT. I will look into that at another time. Still working on getting things going for my site as it is. The old hands full of snakes type analogy.

You can still learn it and play with it without having to have an LP server version.

You can download everything you need to run it on your computer. That's what we did. When we get the site finished, we then will ask to be moved to a Ruby server, upload everything and go live.

Here's where you can get the programs/files you need:

Also, peruse some of the other threads in this forum, as there's other info/links shared that may help you  :thumb:

Wow! Found this topic on first try!

Okay, the two accounts I have here are on: Cerebus and Sedna. Do these have Ruby support on them? Thanks!

Hi ComputerLady,

Unfortunately, neither have ruby as both were setup before we put it on all the new general servers. You can, however, just request to move to a server with ruby on it. We have a lot of them now. To do this, just send a ticket to support@lunarpages.com with your 2 primary domains and cPanel usernames as well as the last 4 digits of your credit card on file (no charges apply, for ownership confirmation only).  In the ticket, request to be moved to a ruby on rails server. I would suggest one with fastcgi as it's more commonly used nowadays than mod_ruby or eRuby.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Still going back and forth over this vs Joomla. I've been told that there are somethings you simply can't do in Ruby, so my debate continues over how much time I should invest into using it. Did buy a 'beginner' book with detailed instructions on how to duplicated Dig's kind of site using Ruby. Will be building that here on my own server to test. Should give me a better idea of which system I like more.

I don't know if I will ever use RoR, but would like to investigate further. I'm guessing my server (Aries) is not so equipped. I don't want to set up a test computer (I presume that I have to set up IIS, etc). Before I request a move, is there anything I would give up by switching? I don't and never will use ASP. I don't use JSP, but want to keep the option of playing with AJAX. Does AJAX need JSP? Doeas AJAX need anything?

Hi birchy,

AJAX doesn't need JSP at all. AJAX isn't even directly associated with JSP. If you wanted to move, simply email support@lunarpages.com and we'd be able to get you started on that. Aries doesn't have Ruby nor RoR, so if you wanted to use it, you would need to move to a supporting server.

As for testing it locally on a Windows machine, there's a really easy way to do that without installing a bunch of components. I wrote an article for Ping!Zine on how to do that. You can read the article on page 47 at http://www.pingzine.com/web-hosting-magazine/pdf/issue-21.pdf

Have a Blessed Day

Is there anything planned to install Ruby and Rails on the servers that support JSP? I'm currently on tethra. I think it's a bit odd that I pay extra for an additional feature (JSP), while losing a comparable feature (RoR). I'd love to start using RoR  :shades:.
