Author Topic: Duplicates on Google  (Read 436 times)

Hi, I have a question concerning a duplicate listing on Google.  I have 4 domain names associated with 1 site

www.bestgarden.net
www.iowagarden.com
www.iowagardens.com
www.bestgardening.net

The main domain is www.bestgarden.net since the site is Best Garden on the Web.  The other domains are for traffic specialized to Iowa, or for those people who randomly type a name into the browser address field.  I do get hits based off these other domain names and that is my motivation for having them.  Now, the 3 domains that aren't the main one are parked pages.  I didn't think they would be indexed by Google or any other search engine since they aren't independently vaild pages.  Now, I just checked on Google, and "www.iowagarden.com" has been indexed.  I don't want to be penalized for having a duplicate site on Google.  The domain should never have been indexed by them since it isn't anything more than a parked address.  So, what should I do, and is this even a problem?  Has anyone had the same problem without any adverse results?

I appreciate any advice you might have on this matter.

All the domains will be treated as seperate websites by google.

As far as I know, there shouldn't be any bad effects of having them indexed.

You could stop them being indexed by using some fancy PHP scripting.

On your index page (index.php), you could make a script that looked at what domain name the page was being accessed with, and put in an appropriate meta tag, telling google either to include it, or not.

I can show you how to do this if you like.

Hi Miraenda,

I potentially have the same problem that you were having with parked domains - and have not been using them because I was afraid of them getting indexed.  Have you had any success in making sure that no negative effects have arisen?

Thanks in advance

Hi dedmond29,

Google isn't appearing to punish me so far for the duplicate.  They are no longer listing it actually.  I am not sure when that happened, but it never hurt the primary site (thank goodness).  I think that eventually the duplication is noticed and the parked ones will drop out.

The one problem with the parked domains, however, is that people who visit through them and link to your site using the parked domain name will not help you with your placement.  I would be interested to know if anyone has a good way to make the links that people might create for the parked domain instead point to being for the primary one.  I had someone linking to my site this way, and I didn't want to ask them "Could you please change the name on the link" because then they might remove it all together.

Very good point - I didn't even think about that effect.  For the site I am referencing - we have a "How to link to us" piece - but I am not sure if people would really look at that.  Is the link you're referencing very valuable (in terms of PR)?  I ended up asking a webmaster once to place the "alt" property in an image they were using to link to us - and it wasn't a problem.  I was extremely polite about it though!!
