Has anyone used Google's adWords advertising program?  I'm curious to hear what experiences anyone has had using this.  Is it effective or just a waste of money?

Hey oveman, I've heard nothing but good things about them, than again, how often do you hear anything negative involving google? AdWords aer CPC (Cost Per Click) so you are kinda in a win win situation anyway...

And more..

And a ever-so-great slashdot article about google in general:
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/18/1338232&mode=thread&tid=95

however, with all the good things I've heard, I've never used it, so I can't speak firsthand experience.

cheers,
nick

Before investing in AdWords, check to see what kind of revenue per click you are likely to generate.  If you only get one sale for every 100 inbound clicks, and that sale is for $10, then your revenue per click is only 10 cents.  If the AdWords charge you 50 cents per click, then you are loosing money on it.

I used to use it, until my rankings got good Smile

Actually I still do use it.  Cranked up a couple of campaigns last night.

Follow what Self-study said and you should be fine.

It's ok to do a little test campaign to see where you are.  They let you limit your spending so you're safe there as long as you're prudent.

Read their documentation and use the tools they provide...keeping in mind they want you to spend money Smile

Adwords turns over for me about what Overture does-actually a bit less.  I get a return, but it's nothing to jump and dance about.  Bottom line, I get an ROI and I guess that's what counts.

I've also seen that it's fickle.  One week it could be astounding, the next you wonder if everybody out there went broke and can't buy anything Smile

A quick note...

Don't get in a bidding war for the #1 slot.  You get a lot more window shoppers as #1 than you do as #2.

Also, Google Adwords assigns position based on a combination of price and clickthrough rate (they give it who whoever makes them the most money).  You can only be sure of getting #1 on Overture and the other pay-per-click engines.

Oh, one more thing... Don't waste your money on 99.99999% of the PPC engines.  Google, Overture, and a handfull of others are the only ones that deliver.

I agree that Google Adwords is pretty good - it also gets you sponsored listings on AskJeeves, AOL & Earthlink.  And the newer "Content Targeting" gets you in ad spaces for sites like the NYTimes.

The only thing I don't like, is that if you don't specify to some degree, what terms/phrases you really want, Google makes some assumptions and might put your ad in places that 1.) you are already optimized for or 2.) That aren't realy relevant.

This happened for one of my campaigns and I had to spend some time identifying where we were showing up that we didn't really need to, and provide some constraints to the terms in the campaign.

I like it the most overall - especially because you can limit your budgets, and I find I can get certain terms and phrases at a much cheaper price per click than some of the competition. Hope this helps!

Google Ads are very effective at bringing in a large amount of targeted traffic - that's good and bad since you pay for click.

You do need to know how much you value a click - but this is hard to do if, like me, you don't have enough traffic at your site yet to evaluate this. You can run a campaign at Google for a week or so to learn.

A good position to aim for is the bottom of the first page (position Gleam or so. When I had a specific and well performing ad last week, I had to keep lowering the bids to keep the position down. I suspect Google gives higher weight to ads with more clickthroughs even if the bid is lower. I haven't seen where Google specifically states this.

Don't go for the thrill of heavy traffic. You might come up with very specific keywords that Google will estimate will get you only 4 hits a day or so. But you will get targeted traffic that will like your product. If they like what you have to offer, your hits will be higher than forecast.

My week of experience with GoogleAds convinces me that it is cost effective for scooters, though I need to learn how to use it better. I don't know yet if it is effective for say, Harry Potter Coins or Aquarium filters, where even .05 per click is high.
