My site currently gets about 18,000 pageviews a day during the American school year. (It's down to about 4,000 a day at the moment, because the kiddies are on winter break.) I know my site is bigger than some sites (Miss Mabel Slobotnick's, say, whose nephew put up a site for her that has only one page and nobody looks at it) and smaller than others (Google's, say, where they get a gazillion hits every hour).

Like all the e-mails say, "Size matters". I was wondering how the size of my site fits into the Slobotnick-to-Google spectrum. How many pageviews does the "average" site get? (Is there such a thing as "average"?) What is the standard deviation on this average? Etc, etc.

I couldn't figure out what keywords to use in searching for useful information. Any info or URLs would be appreciated.

Hi Eliz.

Basically, Google doesn't care one bit how many times people view your page or any page for that matter, or the size of that page.  Google ranking (PR) is based on links from other people to you.  Placement in the search listing on Google is based on links and site design from when the spider crawls your site.  Google and no search engines currently in existence keeps track of page views or size for search engine keyword placement.

I hope this helps.

I'm not asking about page rank. I'm wondering if there is some measure of the "size" of a web site. The "size" would probably be thrown off if one had, say, a forum or message board, as opposed to my non-chat site. But is my site still one of the teeny-weeny baby sites, or is it beginning to approach maturity?

According to Alexa, your site is ranked 88,000. This Forum comes in 29,000th place. Alexa.com ranks every single site. Brazzil is 15,000 today. Yahoo number 1, and Google number 4.

Take a look yourself Cool

Yes, I'd seen this. It's kinda cool! Smile

But Alexa doesn't rate all sites, only those visited by people using the Alexa toolbar. And I have read articles that imply that their stats can be skewed in certain ways that make the results less than reliable.

Is Alexa then the only proxy we have for "site size"?

Well, it is one of the only sources available for that kind of stats. It's not very accurate like you said, but there aren't many (or any) other services like it that I know of.

Anyways, I don't think there is a certain defenition of your "site size." It is usually what you think of your site, and from my perspective I think your site is somewhere in the top 20 percentile of popularity and size. It is really hard to tell though, because it depends on so many things. Some people compare the size of sites based on the ones they have made, and some base their personal decisions on sites such as Google and so forth.

Anyways, I think your site is quite good and popular as well. Look at your hits and keep trying to make them greater as time passes on. That's the best you can do from what I know. Very Happy

Thank you, Coon; that's what I was wondering. And thank you for your comments on my site.  Cool
