Hello Friends........

Metadata is information about data.

The <meta> tag provides metadata about the HTML document. Metadata will not be displayed on the page, but will be machine parsable.

Meta elements are typically used to specify page description, keywords, author of the document, last modified, and other metadata.

The <meta> tag always goes inside the head element.

Thanks

Keep in mind that <meta> tags are not magic. Many search engines, including Google, ignore the "keywords" tag because of long time abuse by page authors. The "description" tag is useful to control what descriptive text a search engine returns for your page, rather than letting it grab a mish-mash of text from the page. The "robots" tag can be used to suggest to search engine robots that they index (or not) a page and that they follow (or not) links to other pages.

There are many other <meta> tags to control various aspects of page usage, including controlling if and how your browser caches a page, as well as other information such as author, copyright, software used, etc.

No, none of them are required to be listed by a search engine. Properly applied, some of them may help improve your page's search engine results, but you'll be far better off improving the content of the page itself -- interesting content, frequently updated, with desired keywords in the text, with proper structure, with text alternatives to graphics, etc. And plenty of backlinks from other sites...

keywords: pretty much ignored by most search engines, due to abuse by page authors
description: no effect on search results, but useful for delivering a nice readable summary on result pages
classification: used by Netscape for category hints
robots: can be useful to concentrate search engine's attention on certain areas, by requesting that certain pages not be indexed or followed (see also robots.txt file)

There are a number of other meta tags made for the benefit of search engines, but most are not widely used or cross-engine.

The description meta has some uses but the keywords meta has long been dead.
