If you have a very unique domain name, you might be listed for the domain terms on the first page without much work.

If your domain name is www.greenapples.com, you will most likely not be on the first page despite your domain name.

While Google takes your domain name into heavy consideration, links to your website, content, and more also have lots of weight.

You need to focus on all those areas to get on the first page for a popular keyword. If you are getting a long and/or unique domain name however, you may be on the first page for your domain name alone just because there's not much competition.

I hope that helps.

Google appears to drop punctuation, but I don't think it will combine (or split) separate words. Don't forget that "green apples" (with quotes) is different from green and apples as separate words.

Space are not required in domain names,  try to us - or _ to connect the two words. And you must also think unique domain name for your website.

It will depend on the competition of your keyword; if your keyword "green apples" has low competitors, you just need to do a little SEO for it; then you will see the results. Having keyword in your domain is an advantage for you to appear on the first page of google, but it will be not sure for the competitive keywords.

Yes, it's up to how well you do SEO for it and how competitive it is. The content is the most important thing worthy to Google. You have to prove this by doing some tasks like writing blogs, articles, kiwi, etc. with the anchor text represented by that key word in them. Just try!
