First off I wwanted to thank everyone for their answers to previous questions I have posted.

I have read and reread this forum a few times and it seems to me that getting top ranked webistes to link to your site is how you get to the top of a search engine.

Here is my question....I am in charge of my company's website and for getting us to the top of the search engine list. However, we will not exchange links with other companies just to get a good ranking. What are the other ways to get around the link exchange? Submit to directories and other search engines? Is there anything more I can do.

Also, when doing a key word search, is there a way to see where you stand in the search without having to go though every single page which can take a long time?? I understand the page rank and have downloaded the toolbar from google and of xourse the business site is at 0.

Any suggestions would be very helpful because my boss is starting to get on me for not having a well ranked site. (I know it takes time but he doesnt)

Thanks!!!!!

Getting incoming links from sites with high PRs is good for your own PR mainly. But PR is not just to be looked at for fun, because Google for example, likes to crawl and update sites more often if your site has a higher pagerank. Google also lists your site higher is you have more incoming links, like you said, but the incoming links are the most useful for your PR. Wink

Yes, submit to directories especially DMOZ and even Yahoo's directory. You have to pay for Yahoo's but if you get into Yahoo and DMOZ, you should be able to get at least a PR of 4 which will help you with your rankings in the long run. To find good directories for you, you can go to Google and type in something like this. For example, my site is soccer related so I would type soccer "add URL" or soccer "submit". This would find me many places that I can submit my site to without having to add a link on my site. Furthermore, you can write article and submit them to websites and ask for a link on the bottom of the article in return. That is also a good thing to do, but it isn't too popular. It just depends if you can come up with some articles that might interest some sites and visitors.

I have found a tool that allows you to search for your sites listings by doing some simple things. You can find where you are ranked for any term, and you can also look up the sites that are linking to you that have a PR of 4+. You can find the free tool at http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/[/quote]

Try not to worry about it mate. I have had a PR of 0 for at least 2-4 months and I worked on my site so hard, but had no success. Luckily now I got some links to my site and now I have a PR of 3 but Google is still updating so that's not the final PR. I have also finally gotten 100+ of my pages listed within Google and the visitors are coming in very well. It all takes time and you will get it done soon enough.

Good luck! Smile

go google, then search for your site's name. As for me, it's "mobile9". You can see that it was last crawled on the 20th of Nov. Or you could download your log and check for googlebots. Hope that help.

I think you have looked for your site on Google already, but here is the URL for your results:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&c2coff=1&q=upfrontsoftware

That page is listed so far, and if you want to see how recently Google looked at your site, just click on the link by your site on Google that says "Cached". That will show you your website from Google's point of view. What you see there is what Google crawled the last time it visited your website. Smile

They say that you have to have a high PR to get a good ranking. But that is false. I placed http://www.angelinadirectory.com in google last month. the title of my site is Angelina County business directory. as a key word, I'm usually #1. Also worded differently ie...angelina county business, angelina county directory, angelina business directory, I'm usually in the top five, occasionally falling to the top ten. And my PR is 0.
Linking helps to some extent but remember that CONTENT is still king. I see posts asking why they can't get a good rank in the search engines and I go check there sites out. And here are the problems I see:
1) search word/words aren't in the title bar.
2) no meta description tag
3) no meta keywords tag.
4) no keywords in H1,H2,H3...tags.
5) words they're trying to search for aren't even on the page.
6) no text links with keywords in them.
There are more but these are the most common I see. If you work on fixing these issues you will see your rankings skyrocket. A good link to help you get started with fixing your page is http://www.sitesolutions.com/tools.asp. Use the Web Site Analysis link and see what is says is wrong with your page.
Having sites with good PR rankings linking to you doesn't help if google thinks your page is irrelevant on its own. Google's new technology may even filter your page from the search results for this reason. Work on getting a good ranking in the search on your own and those PR rankings will start to follow as google recognizes that:
1) other people think this is a good site - ie... linked to it, and,
2) Google thinks it's relevant.
If you need an example, use my site with the tool above and see what I did to get where I'm at.
