The search engines normally don't send a response.

It can be weeks before you are listed, if you are accepted. I'd say the quickest you could hope for would be a couple of weeks.

It actually depends. I got lucky once because I submitted my site to Google around the 25th of a month and they ended up doing their spidering around the end of that month so I got listed within a couple of days. On the other hand, I submited at the beginning of a month, right after they did their ranking and spidering, so I had to wait until the end of the month, but even then I had no luck because I didn't even get spidered that month. I had to wait two whole months to get in and it was a pain to tell you the least.

As you see, it really depends, and as StunnA said the more links you have and the better your site is, the easier the engines will notice you.
