This is a two part question.

First let me say that my site is in a temporary state to sell one product for a short period of time.

Over the next couple of weeks I will be recieving my products and finalizing my website to begin to recieve sales. The success of my website no doubt is based upon my success in search engines for the words "vintage t-shirts".  I am really focus my energy at this time to have my site show up in google.  Here are the steps I have taken:

1.  First I named my site something the pertains to what I'm selling vintageland.com=vintage t-shirts.

Then I submitted my site through LunarPages submitting to search engine option.  I did this a while ago  (we're talking 3-4 months) and still no results.  Maybe the culprit for this is that I only had a "coming soon" page up at the time.

2.  Submitted through Google.  Same time 3-4 months ago.

3.  Provided a link to another site successful in the google search... "american apparel" my blank t-shirt company.  I'd provide more links but as a business certainly don't won't to provide any of my competitors links right?

4.  Metatags...I'm not sure if I have a metatag up right now but I'm going to work on that tommorrow.

From what I understand however is the Google has nothing to do with metatags anyhow they work with spiders.

5.  Submitted my site to the DMOZ this week.  (I realize this probably needs some more time).

6.  Resubmitted my site through Lunar Pages option and google.

Are there any more steps I can take?  Can anyone provided any pointers?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second part of the question:

Once I'm 100% ready to sell I'm going to enroll in the Google AdWords program.  I still want my site to show up on the first page though since personally I never look over to the side just the results of my search.

Will being a part of the Adwords programs speed up the process of getting my site up on Google?

Will it guarentee my placement in the search engine?  Will my advertisement show up instantly if I do the Google Adwords option?

Lots of questions I know but I need lots of help.  This looks like its going to be the most difficult thing I have done yet with my site.  Thanks a lot!

Hi vintageland,

You have done a good job so far in trying to cover several bases to get your site going in the search engines.  Unfortunately, search engines like Google can take months to visit your site sometimes and even longer to list you decently in the rankings.  First of all, I would suggest submitting to those sites listed at http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4834, a thread we have on Search Engine Submission.  Basically, any and every search engine that you can get listed on will improve your customer base.  Also, getting listed at www.zeal.com (by becoming an editor) will automatically get you included in Looksmart and MSN.

If you do get listed in DMOZ (and they will base this on whether they consider your site to be a quality site), you will eventually be listed on Google.  I can attest to this fact.  Now that my site is listed in dmoz, I have finally gotten a #1 position, although it isn't for a phrase people are likely to use frequently.

To improve Google's spidering your content and keywords, note that Google reads page content rather than meta tags for spidering.  This means that you should have header tags (especially h1, h2) for titles since Google gives them primary importance.  Next, Google looks at what you have on the page in <p> tags.  So, repeat important keywords in descriptions on your site.

Finally, to improve your rankings, you must have sites linking to you as this is what Google uses to determine your placement.  You don't have to get links from competitors, get them from people interested in vintage tee-shirts.  There have to be fan sites, blogs, forums, etc. for vintage tee-shirts.

As for AdWords improving your ranking, I don't use AdWords so I can't say.  But, I believe Google's faqs note that using AdWords doesn't help you in the Google search engine.  They are ads and not considered links, so I doubt they are going to help you.  I could be wrong, and welcome anyone using AdWords to assist in explaining this better.

I hope this helps.

So a blog would be appropriate for my kind of site.  I don't know much about them, I'll have to do some research.  Thanks a bunch.

I can definitely say that having a "coming soon" type of message - while you were initially submitting - would have hurt you then - you should be okay now that you have a workable site.

Allthough I like the image on the main page of the site, you should really consider getting some text content up there as well - especially headings, footers and main text which include the phrase "Vintage T-Shirts".  Make sure your the phrases/terms you want are also in your Title and Meta description tags as well.  It is an uphill battle to try to get good placement with only an imagemap on the index page.

The term "Vintage T-Shirts" is very popular, and it might take a considerable amount of time for you to appear well - keep this in mind and don't get frustrated.  Also - definitely focus on establishing inbound links - and try to get link titles like "VintageLand - Vintage T-Shirts" - i.e. try to get your keywords named in the link.

As far as Adwords, Miraenda is correct, that they will not help you get into the Google Search Engine any faster ot better, but your ads appear pretty fast in the adwords section of Google.  Hope this helps!

What you mentioned about the graphics is a great suggestion that for some reason I didn't think about.  I wanted to use a catchy font so I made everything a graphic instead of just listing it as arial text or whatever.  I'll try to change it with having to compensate the high end look I'm trying to achieve.

Now this might be a stupid question but are headers and footers something that can usually be scene on a website or are they simply part of the internal code?

Thanks.

Not a stupid question - more or less I was adding to what Miraenda had said ...
Try to use the <h1> <h2> & <h3> tags - I've heard Inktomi likes the <h3> tags.  Also, putting some sort of footer text helps, as some Search Engines will grab the text that is on the bottom of the page.  The thing about text, is that if you do not have any, there is a chance that when Google lists your site, they will not have any sort of description with it - so all that will be there is your title info. And if all you have is a link map or something, that is what will appear - and it might not make sense to viewers.

Hope this helps!
