You can use keywords in your content, place them in your page titles and descriptions, and embed them in your HTML code in the form of META tags and alt tags. In fact, a bunch of keywords crammed onto a page of useless content will not boost your ranking, rather it might lower it. So where is the most suitable placement for keywords?

keywords in meta tags would not get considered for ranking they would get considered for ranking. You can still add keywords in alt tag for images, footer, title of the links. The most important keywords should get placed on H1 tag with either start of the content or at end of the content.

I think Google checks for keywords in your title and meta description tag. So I think you should put your keywords in title and in meta tags.

Start from the top.....

  • In The URL and Domain Name
  • In link anchor text
  • In The Title of the Head section of your HTML code
  • In your site navigation
  • In your content (Repeat once in every 100 words, Use keyword proximity concept)
  • In your H1, H2 and H3 heading tags
  • In Image ALT attribute
  • In link anchor text

You can also use keyword as folder name, sub folder name and image name.

Its not the position exactly which matters that very much. Its the relevancy of the keywords.
But for taking best advantage you can have them in Meta text, title, introductory para, image tag etc.
