I think what Stephan is trying to say is that meta tags aren't as important in rankings as they used to be.  The description tag is redundant on Google as the descriptions are either taken from the content or if the site is in the directory from their description.

Google realised that you could have a site on football and have meta tags saying its about naked Britney Spears pictures or something   Shock.!!  So whilst they don't do any harm being in there they aren't the reason that sites rank well anymore.

point is 'uglypeople' is not a word...it's indexing it via the url...but if you type in 'ugly people', your site will not come up(I looked 20 pages deep and couldn't find it)

and by the way...your forum board is now ranked #7 and your main page is #11 Sad  (you were #4 the other day, I saw it Smile )

Yeah it is stephen, LOL. Don't let these dumb engines mess you up. Most of the time they are really not fair for some terms.

Well, thankyou Smile

Although my website is called www.uglypeople.co.uk , it is not about uglypeople! So, the search engine results are bound to be a bit strange.

Crazylady - Google spiders look only for meta tags

This is true...without metatags, Google will never list you.

Meta tags don't matter at all to Google for indexing purposes. Not one iota.

It should also be said that meta tags have very little affect on ranking.

As for:

and

Code:

There is no truth to either of those statements.  Gleam

This is in response to the earlier message that says that pages does not show up in google if there are no meta tags. I used to agree with you earlier but I have seen cases where this is not the case. Eg: try searching for the word counseling on google. The first link that it shows is http://counseling.org which is of American Counseling Association. I think there is something else that google gives importance to. If you find that out, then please let us know.

Thanks

Yes, meta tags aren't important to Google. Your domain words are important if they match the search words, links are the most important, and words on your site that match the search terms have a high impact on your ranking as well. There is many more things but those are the key ones actually to me.
