I've seen hints that some folks try their hand at making a website, but see that it's a bit more than cutting and pasting.

When I realized I needed a site for my business, I tried it myself.  It was fun, and my business was significantly enhanced.  That site is http://www.werentcolumbus.com

I am a historian and genealogist, so proposed a site for the Catholic Diocese of Columbus (Ohio) Catholic Record Society.  Here's the site I made (and maintain) for them: http://www.catholicrecordsociety.org

Seeing these successes, I'm working on trying to work out a gameplan to offer cheap but appealing websites, so am working on a new site for http://www.thriftysites.com

If anyone is interested in speaking further about this, just let me know:

so I know... but really... you're offended that people might not hold the same views as you? or that someone would be happy with the freedom to be able to express their political views?  Confused

If I had enough money to have someone else do my website... I'd have one of my friends over at www.behindthecurtain.org design me one.
Which, by the way, is an excellent forum to see the skill levels of professionals who have been operating in the field of design for years and can give you a few pointers, possibly. One day you may be giving pointers to other fledging designers.
Have a nice day.

Ed:  I don't know any Flash or Bang (which, I'll guess "custom dynamic work" falls under).  You'll see a good representation of my design skills at http://www.werentcolumbus.com and http://www.catholicrecordsociety.org

All:  The avitar stays...until I find a good crucifix to replace it with Thumbs Up
No, I won't use this sort of thing in my business...there's too many people out there who use them to deceive.

All:  The most important part is what you get for your money.  I think there's a market for "Pleasing and Successful but Simple and Cheap" websites.

My main target is small businesses around me that have urls in the Yellow Pages to sites that are down or in shambles.  There's lots of them. My "spiel" will include some education: A successful website is like having a part-time employee.

I'm working on "features" for $25 and $50 website packages.

The bottom line: I'm just a guy who tried something - and realized unimaginable success from it.  I think I can offer this to others for $25-$50 per month.

I won't go on and on with a spiel here...I'm working on that for the site.

Thanks for piping in, all!

You will soon get tired of working for $25/month, believe me.
I'm tired of working on the website for $400/month. But it's full of interesting tasks including php/mysql/c++ and even win32 application programming, so i'm getting really good experience from it.

My customers will be ones who do not need extensive or frequent editing.

I spend no more than a few minutes a week maintaining http://www.werentcolumbus.com.

But I also know well that I have much to learn.

I'm not a salesman and I don't need the money.  I'm just saying "I've been thrilled to death with the success of my sites.  If you like what you see and want something like it for yourself, I'll do it cheap"

Modern web sites do not need any special knowledge in Web to edit and update the content, this job can be done by any secretary or manager by using any of the CMS (content management system), or any custom alternative made by web-programmer.

But for small web sites, such as http://www.werentcolumbus.com, there is no need in CMS, so yes, your service can be useful Smile

Yep.  I've already got a customer who wants me to "fix" his site: http://www.qualityapartmentsigns.com.  In this case it will be a one time fee and he will mostly "maintain" it himself with minimal updates like sales, new signs he's made, etc...

In his case he's got a double problem.  He's high on the list of Google signage searchers, but when someone sees his site, they see a cheezy site...might make some of them think he does cheezy work.

There's alot of people like him out there who bought software (FP in his case), got the basics down, but don't have the time to learn to get it right.

Those are #1 on my target list.

You will want to make sure that the SEO doesn't get lost in the re-doing. Much of the time its the worst looking sites that get the best ranking as they are relavent content and as a result the search engines love them.
