Registration is disabled
« on: September 22, 2015, 11:30:17 AM »
Hi, I'm one of the administrators on themanchesters.org forum (not for profit group dedicated to the Manchester Regiment - none of us are IT savvy). Unfortunately, due to the amount of spam we were receiving we had to disable the registration. Within the forum we have put a message "How to Join" but people rarely see this. When they try and register they get the message "Registration is disabled". We would love to be able to change the message to include a hyperlink to the "How to Join" advice. The below solution appeared on the simplemachines forum (please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong place) but I've found several "/languages/Errors.english.php" files and changed them all but it hasn't changed the message "Registration is disabled".

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=509627.msg3594143#msg3594143

We are using version 1.1.21

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Best regards
Pete

Either you modified the wrong file, or you modified the right one, but failed to properly upload it to your site. In the latter case, you might have uploaded to the wrong directory, or the file is read-only (such as 444 permissions) and the upload failed to overwrite it. Go into your control panel (cPanel or LPCP?) File Manager and take a look at the file you think you modified, and see if your changes are really there.

There is one other possibility: you did successfully modify the right file, but it's still using a cached version. In your browser, hit Ctrl+F5 on the page where you get the message, to force a fresh page reload. If still no change, SMF has its own caching that you may need to force a refresh on. You'll have to ask someone SMF-savvy about that. If you're running SMF you ought to be signed up on the Simple Machines Forum and asking SMF-specific questions there.

Thank you Mr Phil. I've tried all that but was still unable to make the change.

Thanks anyway :)

Did you use your account control panel's File Manager to check the file(s) you modified, and you found that the changes you made were present? Was the "registration is disabled" message originally in the file(s) you changed, and the changed message is now there? (you didn't add the message) There is an Errors.english.php in each theme offered -- are you sure you hit the right one for the theme you're using? (no harm in changing all of them)

When you get the "registration is disabled" page (or is it a pop-up?), hit Ctrl+F5 to force a fresh reload of the page. Maybe you're seeing a cached version. Or, try it on another PC which has not been used for signup attempts, so it doesn't have any cached pages. Finally, I don't recall if SMF v1.1 has its own cache, but you might look around the SMF forum for how to refresh that cache (there would likely be some button on the SMF dashboard).
