Hello, lunarforums. Very Happy

I am having a few difficulties installing phpbb which I pray you’ll be able to help me with. Thumbs Up  Just a heads-up, this is the first website I have ever attempted to run, and my only previous coding experience is html and C++, so I’m not too hot on php and mysql.

Anyway. I’d like to install it manually if possible, not using Fantastico, as I plan later to install phpbb plus. (I realise I may have to uninstall phpbb, but I’d like to follow the tutorials to the word on my first attempt).

So. I’ve uploaded the files, and have followed embwayne’s tutorial. However, when I finally press the install button, I receive the following error:

An error occurred trying to update the database
You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ' 493B4', '', 'DD6900', 'EFEFEF', 'DEE3E7', 'D1D7DC', '', '', ''

What am I doing wrong? :/

My site is www.ess-a.com.

Thanks in advance for the help, I’m extremely grateful that I signed up to a host with such great support. Smile

have you imported the sql file to your MySQL?

if so, have you created the database and the database user?

have you added the database user to the MySQL database?

hope some of these can point out what your doing wrong. Thumbs Up

Hi, Garvey. Thumbs Up

Not sure.

Yes.

Yes.

Basically, I clicked in CPanel on MySQL Account Maintenance, wrote "forum" in the adddb field, pressed Add Db, adsed a user and password, then added that to Db with all privilegs. Finally added localhost to Access Host.

In the phpbb Installation screen, I'm absolutely certain I wrote down the name of the Db and User, etc correctly, and also that I picked the right version (4.x).

Any other ideas?

the database name will be cpanelusername_databasename username will be cpanelusername_databaseusername the password will be what you specified.

LP adds the username prefix infront of these to stop 2 accounts on one server conflicting.

Yeah, I know. I added that in.  As I said, I'm sure all the info I wrote there is correct.

But still the error...  Sad

:x

Oh, ok. Thanks a lot!

I’m really sorry if I did anything wrong. As I said, I’m a bit new to this. :/

I’m going to now try upgrading to phpbb plus, as I’d like to use their portal. Shall I just fill in everything like I was doing before?

Again, thanks.  Very Happy

we installed phpbb, then we are copying over it with phpbbplus Confused

kinda defats the point, would it not be better to just install one, otherwise your using more tables on your database than you should be?

i'm also wondering what you're upto, as i'm in their fixing the mysql, the all of a sudden files have edited theirselves Confused

LOL. Sorry. Confused

It was always my intention to install phpbb plus over phpbb, as I said in my original post, but the tutorials for setting up phpbb were A) easier to get a hold of, and B) easier to follow, so I decided to do that first, in order to gain a grasp of what I was going to be doing for phpbb plus where tutorials are scarce.

As to what I’m up to… nothing. Not even logged into control panel or anything. Confused

Thank you.
